The British High
Commission is the diplomatic liaison office that aims to develop and maintain
close bilateral relations with Uganda, in accordance with British government
policies. The British High Commission is responsible for the political
relationship between the UK and Uganda, and we provide advice and guidance on
political and governance issues. BHC provides assistance and documentary
services to British nationals in Uganda. The UK Trade and Investment Section
provides assistance to both British and Ugandan businesses.

Job Summary: The Communications Officer will:
- Lead strategic communications for the British High Commission in
traditional media as well as social media platforms; - Run independent campaigns, prepare for press events, and accompany
senior management on media calls; - Provide media handling at internal and external events, to place op
eds and interviews and recruit suitable journalists for briefings; - Drive forward the Chevening Scholarship programme including
marketing and administration; - Provide support on internal communications, crisis response and
broader corporate objectives.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Classic media work in support of UK government priorities in Uganda.
- Drive forward our ambitious communication strategy with a focus on
social media engagement; - Set up and manage briefings, interviews and events;
- Draft press releases and media invites;
- Compile media distribution lists and contacts, evaluate all media
activity; - Press/media handling around visits;
- Working to the Head of Communications to plan and implement
strategic communication for Department for International Development, the
Department for International Trade, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office
and the Ministry of Defence in Uganda; - Lead the marketing and administration of the Chevening Scholarship
programme; - Lead on branding, ensuring brand visibility and managing brand
logistics for events; - Managing the communications budget;
- The officer will also be expected to support broader corporate
objectives: e.g. crisis response. - Resources managed (staff and expenditure):
- Communications budget and contractors at events for example.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant for the British High Commission Communications Officer
job placement must have significant experience in managing and creating
content for social media platforms, particularly Facebook and Twitter; - Journalistic or broader communications experience;
- Writing skills;
- Strong interpersonal skills;
- Excellent IT skills, particularly Microsoft Office applications.
- Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
- Experience of using digital analytics tools;
- Project management skills;
- Knowledge of the Ugandan media environment;
- Editorial work experience.

and Partnering, Managing a Quality Service, Delivering at Pace
