Corporation (URC) is a body corporate established under an Act of Parliament to
construct, operate and maintain railway, marine and road services both inside
and outside Uganda for the carriage of passengers and goods. As a result of privatisation
of operations, the mandate of URC changed from that of an operator to that of
asset holder, concession monitor and advisor on railway technical matters.

oversight, efficient management of the Legal Department and support to the
Corporation on Legal Risk generally and provide support to the Board of
Directors.
- Proactively identify and manage legal risks posed to the Corporation
by legislation, litigation, policies, products, unique customer
relationships and processes. - Assist the Corporation Secretary in management of Board affairs;
- Proactively engage with key stakeholders, e.g. Ministries,
Departments, & Agencies, law enforcement agencies, and regulators to
improve compliance and efficiency in the operations of the Corporation; - Provide leadership, supervision, training and development of
department staff ensuring an effective and motivated team; - Advise the Corporation on Corporate Governance and related issues;
- Provide awareness training in relevant legal matters touching the
Corporation’s Operations; - Review and update Management and staff on any new legislation that
affects the Corporation’s business or operations; - Prepare legal opinions, monthly & quarterly reports relating to
assignments being handled by the Legal Department for presentation to
Management; - Liaise with other departments to ensure that where legal risks have
been identified, appropriate courses of action have been taken; - Perform any other duties as may be assigned by Management or your
immediate supervisor.
- The ideal candidate for the Uganda Railways Corporation (URC)
Principal Legal Officer job placement should possess a Bachelor’s degree
(Hons) in Law (LLB), - Post graduate diploma in legal practice and in possession of a valid
practicing certificate; - Must be an Advocate of the High Court of Uganda for at least 8 years
of which at least three (3) years must have been at senior management
level in a corporate company or busy law firm; - A Master’s degree in a business related field or Membership of the
Chartered Institute of Secretaries and Administrators will be an added
advantage. - Demonstrable experience in dealing with board matters;
- Strong leadership and managerial skills;
- Excellent relationship management and communication skills;
- A team player who is enthusiastic, positive, adaptable, and
proactive; - Networking skills, tact and diplomacy; with ability to positively
influence people; - Strong analytical and organizational Skills;
- Assertive, self – driven and results oriented;
- High level of Integrity
