Uganda Electricity Supply Accelerator (“Power Africa Uganda Accelerator”) is
funded by the United States Agency for International Development. The goal of
the Power Africa Uganda Accelerator is to facilitate 1,000 Megawatts (MW) of
additional generation capacity and one million new connections in Uganda by
2020. This target is aligned with the Government of Uganda’s target of
increasing generation capacity to 2,500 MW by 2020 and Power Africa’s overall
target of adding 30,000 MW and 60 million new connections in sub-Saharan Africa
by 2030.
Job Summary:  The Off-Grid Business Development Specialist
will support to off-grid energy companies (“clients”) throughout Uganda by providing
technical assistance, business development, and management services to enhance
sales, marketing, financial, and managerial performance. The Off-Grid Business
Development Specialist will be a relationship manager, technical assistance
provider and general problem-solver for off-grid companies looking to establish
or build their business in Uganda.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Identify and interview potential clients for support under the Power
    Africa Uganda Accelerator.
  • Interview prospective clients both at the Power Africa Uganda
    Accelerator’s offices and at their places of business, explaining how
    project can benefit them.
  • Support and provide guidance to private sector enterprises in
    defining their business needs
    .
  • Identify support services that are most beneficial, practical, and
    cost effective for client business growth.
  • Provide market intelligence, including feasibility studies,
    regulatory analysis, and market research.
  • Facilitate introductions to investors / financiers or local /
    international partners
  • Participate in the review and evaluation of grant proposals.
  • Participate in the preparation of proposals and statements of work
    aimed at improving business performance, skills development, and capital
    investment for clients.
  • Capacity building of client staff on marketing, consumer awareness,
    and other skills.
  • Identify, prepare, organise and update all relevant documentation
    internally.
  • Undertake any activities as are necessary to implement and meet the
    objectives of the project.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The applicant for the USAID Power Africa Off – Grid Business
    Development Specialist job must hold a Bachelor’s degree in business
    management, business administration, economics, renewable energy, or a
    related field; MBA preferred.
  • At least ten years’ experience in Business Development, Market
    Development, or a related position.
  • Knowledge of sales, entrepreneurship, business planning, and
    financial management.
  • Proven experience with SMEs in the off-grid energy sector.
  • Self-starter who can work independently within a team of
    professionals.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and training skills.
  • Excellent analytical, writing and report drafting skills.
  • Excellent computer skills.
