University was founded when the historic Bishop Tucker Theological College was
promoted as a university in 1997. Bishop Tucker Theological College trained
clergy and educators during its 84-year history from 1913-1997. The local
chief, Hamu Mukasa, granted land for the college to operate in Mukono.
International partnerships were part of the College’s missionary history. The
Church Mission Society teamed with Ugandan leaders and others to assure the
College had the necessary intellectual and other capital. By the late 1990s,
the Church of Uganda sought to have a broader impact on society through the
higher education – not only of clergy but of other professionals as well.
Uganda Christian University was established in 1997.
Job Summary:  The Senior Assistant Librarian provides
reference services, attending to quick queries of library users at the Front
Desk, and serves as a PR focal point of the Library. The Reference Librarian
shall sit at the Reference Desk, to provide reference services via telephone,
email, texts, chat and/ or any other social media services analyze information
requests to determine which materials will best meet that researchers’ needs.
He/she is expected to support discovery, research, learning, and engagement
through the delivery of a range of library services designed to maximize the
benefits of relevant scholarly information resources and services.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Develops strong liaison relationships with faculty in assigned
    discipline areas.
  • Provides research assistance and consultations to the UCU community
    in-person, via telephone, email, chat, and other means. This includes
    instruction in the use of resources and guidance in developing critical
    thinking, the research process and strategies.
  • Provides guidance and training in the ethical use of information in
    research, including, referencing, and avoiding plagiarism and respect of
    copyrighted materials.
  • Manages the dissertations and theses collection. Also, may assume
    collection development responsibilities for other collections as assigned.
    Partners with faculty to build and regularly evaluate the collection.
  • Creates and maintains library, and subject-specific research guides.
    For example, oversees development of content for web-based subject guides
    in assigned areas, and develops course guides where needed for specific
    classes.
  • Promotes digital literacy and participates in training the use of
    digital resources.
  • Performs descriptive cataloguing of dissertations and theses.
  • Coordinates the Research Services and librarians in the Library. May
    supervise subordinate staff.
  • Serves as a Christian role model to students by actions, words and
    lifestyle.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned based on the Library
    needs, interests, and expertise.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The Senior Assistant Librarian must hold a Master’s degree in
    Library and Information Science degree or its equivalent with a strong
    research component is equally acceptable from a recognized institution of
    higher education with at least 2 years experience working in an academic
    library.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of journals, bibliographic and
    citation databases
  • Demonstrated experience in library services, providing instruction
    and training of others in the use of research tools, or support for
    collaborative working spaces
Minimum
requirements and additional knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Library and Information Science from a
    recognized institution of higher education with at least 5years experience
    working in an academic library.
  • Familiarity with referencing styles, referencing tools and methods
    of avoiding plagiarism.
  • Experience providing research assistance, conducting online searches
    across multiple resources/platforms using advanced searching techniques.
  • Strong interpersonal skills in relationship building, outreach,
    cooperation building, and collaboration across diverse groups of users.
