Bureau of Standards (UNBS) is a statutory body under the Ministry of Trade
Industry and Cooperatives mandated to coordinate the elaboration of standards
and quality of products and services so as to facilitate fair trade, promote
local industries and protect consumers.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Coordinate, monitor and carry out field surveillance visits to
    ascertain compliance to the weights and measurement requirements in line
    with UNBS standards and departmental policies and procedures
  • Develop and design verification guidelines and checklists to ensure
    that field staff follow set procedures in conducting verification
    exercises as per laws established.
  • Provide technical support to field staff, supervise, monitor and
    mentor staff in the Division to ensure that they handle their assignments
    professionally and follow the inspectors code of conduct as they execute
    their roles
  • Develop and monitor the implementation of the annual, quarterly and
    monthly budget, work plans and targets of all activities to be undertaken
    within the Division
  • Provide technical support, sensitization and guidance to traders and
    all stakeholders in line with verification requirements.
  • Develop and maintain database and inventory of all seized equipment
    in line with UNBS standards
  • Monitor measurement traceability of working standards in line with
    departmental policies and procedures
  • Prepare weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reports

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The applicant for the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS)
    Principal Legal Metrologist- Weights and Measures job opportunity should
    hold a Masters’ degree in Science or any other related field from a
    recognized University/Institute
  • Honours degree in physics, engineering and any other related field.
  • At least eight years of related work experience
  • Certificate in Investigations and prosecution
  • Hands-on supervisory competencies with capacity to multi-task and
    deliver results efficiently with minimal supervision
  • Must be computer literate with skills in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint,
    and the Internet applications
  • The successful candidate must have a high level of integrity and
    professionalism, Communication, Teamwork and Analytical skills.
  • Age: Between 30
    and 45 years
