The International
Rescue Committee helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by
conflict and disaster to survive, recover, and gain control of their future. It
was created by Albert Einstein more than 80 years and has been working in
Uganda since 1998. It has particularly working in the conflict zones where tens
of thousands of people have been kills and over 1.6 million displaced.
Following a peace agreement in 2006, Ugandans are returning home and looking to
rebuild their lives. The IRC is there to protect women and children from
violence and exploitation by fostering a safe environment and encouraging
education, and is supporting farmers and small businesses, and helping communities
promote peace and long-term development.
Job Summary: The
Information Technology Support Volunteer will provide direct technical
assistance and support to IRC Moroto staff for network, hardware and software
issues. Duties include installing and maintaining computer systems including
software and hardware on desktops and laptops, resolving internet and network
access issues (both wired and wireless), testing and resolution via
modifications, repair, or external support assistance etc.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Respond to user requests for service,
    troubleshoot problems and help develop solutions. Seek second level
    support from Senior ICT Officer whenever challenged.
  • Provide technical Support on PC hardware
    components, desktop operating system software, and application software.
  • Provide first level support on office
    network infrastructure and connectivity issues.
  • Perform minor repairs to equipment and
    arrange for other servicing needs.
  • Monitor antivirus software and updates
    and make sure that all are up-to-date.
  • Monitor backup systems and procedures to
    ensure data security.
  • Learn how to use the IRC PR system to
    request for ICT items.
  • Assist in maintaining inventory records
    and documentation of ICT equipment.
  • Develop and provide user training for basic
    hardware and software use.
  • Make sure that the servers, switches,
    Wireless Routers, Firewall Routers and Printers are all on and functioning
    optimally.
  • Maintain open communication and positive
    working relationship with staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
  • The applicant for the International
    Rescue Committee Information Technology Support Volunteer job placement
    must hold a Diploma/degree in Computer related field from any recognized
    institution. Network and Computer administration courses is an advantage.
  • Minimum of six months paid or volunteer
    work experience with computer desktop support in a networked environment
    for a small to mid-sized organization.
  • A basic understanding of computer
    network cabling and network file and print services.
  • A basic understanding in VMWare
    virtualization Technology.
  • An understanding of Microsoft Server
    2016, Server and systems administration.
  • Basic knowledge in Firewall routers and
    Network Security.
  • Basic knowledge in enterprise Database
    systems
  • Proficiency in computer applications:
    • Microsoft Excel – Manipulation of data;
      transferring data; development of charts and tables
    • Microsoft Word – Entering and
      formatting text; inserting charts, tables, and other visuals
    • Microsoft PowerPoint – Creating and
      editing slides; inserting text, charts, tables, and visuals
    • Conducting research via internet
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and
    efficiently manage time.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and
    effectiveness in working with a high performing team
  • Strong oral and written communications
    skills
  • Ability to respond effectively to
    inquiries or complaints.
