Job Summary:  The Minority Rights Group Media Officer
(Africa) will help the Minority Rights Group (MRG) achieve its aims and
objectives through the implementation of its media programmes. Primarily this
will be coordinating MRG’s new 3-year programme “*Reporting Effectively on
Minorities, Migration and Development”,** which will focus on capacity building
of Journalists and Media Officers in Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia to
report more effectively on minority issues related to international development
and migration.
As Media Officer
(Africa), the post holder will be expected to develop and oversee the delivery
of the project’s activities in Africa. Activities will include: supporting the
delivery of an online training course for journalists and journalism students
(specifically assisting participants in completing assignments relating to
minority and indigenous communities in Africa), conducting capacity building
trainings, and coordinating field visits for journalists to meet minority and
indigenous communities in sub-Saharan Africa. In addition to implementing the
above programme, the post holder will also be responsible for developing and
implementing MRG’s overall Communications Strategy for Africa. This will
include developing contacts with relevant media personnel, undertaking media
outreach in the region and also supporting our other programmes in Africa, to
more effectively target media.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
·        
Two years
of experience as either a journalist or a media officer or similar post with a
particular focus and successful track record in achieving multimedia (print,
broadcast or online) coverage in international media.
·        
A
successful track record of designing and implementing media capacity building
programmes for journalists and civil society.
·        
Two years
of experience in each of at least two out of the following four areas:
·        
Experience
with print, radio, TV and online media.
·        
Experience
of news as well as features and documentaries in some or all of these formats.
·        
Experience
of making short films, visual media content and/or photography.
·        
Project
implementation: budgets, logistics, monitoring, planning and evaluating.
·        
Experience
of working with, or on issues related to, asylum seekers/refugees, migrants,
minority or indigenous communities in Africa.
·        
Experience
in designing and delivering training programmes for journalists and civil
society organisations.
·        
Organising
media events, including press conferences, with the aim of influencing
(including influencing senior personnel in organisations).
·        
Demonstrated
understanding of the importance of achieving balanced coverage, showing
sensitivity towards issues concerning minorities and indigenous peoples plus
the importance of avoiding sensationalising stories.
·        
Detailed
knowledge of debates about minority and indigenous peoples’ rights in Africa.
·        
Experience
in research and writing on minority and indigenous peoples’ rights issues in
Africa.
·        
A good
knowledge of African minority and indigenous communities.
·        
Some
experience of liaising with or working in Community-Based Organisations or
NGOs.
·        
Ability
to prioritize work and meet deadlines.
·        
Ability
to work in a team but also use own initiative.
·        
Ability
to stay calm under pressure and to assess and absorb information quickly.
·        
Ability
to maintain confidentiality and ability to gain the confidence of members of
minority communities and public officials.
·        
Excellent
communication, writing skills and presentation skills (in English)
·        
Ability
to work in multicultural teams.
·        
Knowledge
of gender issues and willingness and ability to mainstream in all work.
·        
Ability
and willingness to travel.
·        
Excellent
interpersonal skills, ability to network and nurture contacts.
·        
Fluent
written and spoken English.
