The Makerere University Walter
Reed Project (MUWRP) is a non-profit HIV research program that was established
in 2002 as a result of a memorandum of understanding between Makerere
University and The Henry M. Jackson foundation for Advancement of Military
Medicine Inc. of USA (HJF). The primary purpose of MUWRP is to develop,
evaluate and provide interventions to mitigate disease threats of public health
importance to Uganda.
Job Summary: The Pharmacist
will ensure smooth conduct of a vaccine trial and assure compliance with the
protocol and GCP/ICH guidelines, the Pharmacist will be called upon to assist
with dispensing IP, recording and maintaining data and source documents. This
may be in event of absence of the Pharmacist of Record or in conjunction with
him if the workload so demands. In order for the Pharmacist to carry out his
responsibilities well, he will need to be available as and when may be needed,
undergo adequate protocol-specific training at MUWRP and appraised. This will
equip him/her with a full understanding and implementation of protocol
requirements for investigational product handling, inventory, accountability
and disposition. Prior clinical trial experience is an advantage.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Importation,
    Maintenance, Inventory, Preparation, Dispensing and Disposal of
    Investigational and non-Investigational Drugs as per protocol, IP manuals
    and site SOPs
  • Compliance
    with clinical research study procedures and GCP standards
  • Writing,
    Revising and implementing Standard Operating Procedures as they pertain to
    the pharmacy
  • Full
    understanding and implementation of protocol requirements for
    investigational product.
  • Maintain
    accurate and complete record of used/unused vials of the investigational
    product as required by protocol/sponsor.
  • Maintain
    blinding of clinical staff as per protocol and site SOP for Un-blinding.
  • Ensure
    good functioning of freezers, bio-safety cabinets as per manufacturer
    (operator’s manual) and/ or site SOPs
  • To
    ensure that all IP storage units are locked when not in use.
  • Maintain
    5-day a week records of single readings, and min-max temperature and/ or
    humidity monitoring data (as specified by protocol) on digital display,
    mercury thermometers, certified- digital thermometers and any other as may
    be determined.
  • Ensure
    that the alarm system is fully functioning at least once a week and that a
    back-up system is identified in case of appliance break down.
  • On
    a quarterly basis, run a mock emergent transfer (as per SOP) to tertiary
    storage units (currently at the MUWRP lab) and until a successful run is
    achieved
  • Maintain
    current GCP/ICH and HSP (Human Subjects Protection) training as required.
  • Undertake
    protocol specific training at MUWRP
  • Acquiring
    and maintenance of requisite licenses of practice, registrations and
    certificates.
  • Participate
    in QA/QC monthly/quarterly checks during enrolment and annual assessment
    of pharmacy performance and requirements
  • Ensure
    research participant safety and confidentiality.
  • Pharmaceutical
    supplies management of ARVs for the PEPFAR program
  • Pharmaceutical
    supplies management of OI drugs and other medications for MUWRP Cohorts
    and PEPFAR programs.
  • Other
    duties as may be assigned.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
  • The
    ideal candidate should preferably hold a B. Sc in Pharmacy
  • One
    year of post-qualification professional experience.
  • Training
    or experience in clinical research and added advantage
  • Good
    interpersonal/communications skills.
  • Fluency
    in verbal and written English and Luganda.
  • Highly
    organized, detail-oriented and self-motivated
  • Ability
    to handle multiple task simultaneously
  • Highly
