distribution network, retailing electricity to its customers, improving

Exchange since 2012. Umeme has over 620,000 customers of which 20% are on

Job Summary: The
Communications Officer will mainly implement public and media relations
activities of Umeme including preparing media articles, press releases,
features and researching topical news and social media items for publications
to positively portray the company image and reputation.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepare press releases, topical news
items, leaflets, in-house journals, publicity brochures, information for web
sites and promotional videos for internal and public consumption to
improve company image. - Research the Electricity Sector and
market, publish relevant News articles, blogs and social media articles to
influence positive public opinion of the company. - Build and maintain positive relationships,
network with other writers, as well as industry players such as
publishers, script editor’s, producers, radio personalities to influence
pro-business publications. - Prepare, format and submit material for
media publication in the required in line with the brand guidelines. - Source and maintain knowledge of
publication opportunities; market the company through online presence,
organising promotional events such as press conferences, open days,
exhibitions, tours and visits. - Daily reviews of business related stories
and articles in the media, flag articles for actioning through appropriate
response to strengthen/protect company brand position. - Prepare briefs, articles and press
releases for internal and external use in line with company policy. - Collaborate with media houses to acquire
pro-business news leads, timely gather news for Internal and external
consumption in line with company policy. - Write pro-business pieces, edit, revise
and review company publications that positively publicise the company.
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience:
Experience:
- The applicant should preferably hold a
Degree in Communication, Journalism or related field. - A minimum of three years’ experience
working as a PR and relations officer. - Adept to social media & digital
platforms for communication and publication purposes in a busy
environment, preferably a utility. - Must have experience in media relations.
- Creative writing skills.
- Knowledge of standard industry software
e.g. publisher. - Must have an eye for news.
- Knowledgeable about the Energy Sector and
Umeme as a business. Must have experience in writing and reporting. - Must be creative and innovative.
- Knowledge about local, regional and
international media. - Creativity in social media communication.
- Journalism practical experience will be an
added advantage.
