The African Wildlife Foundation (AWF), founded in 1961 as the African
Wildlife Leadership Foundation, is an international conservation organization
that focuses on critically important landscapes in Africa. When founded in
1961, the purpose was to train Africans to maintain game reserves professionally,
ensuring an adequate supply of game for hunters on safari. Later, the mandate
evolved to supporting western scientists in studies of protected animals in
their natural habitat. More recently, the focus has been on developing
sustainable systems that benefit both animals and local human communities.
Job Summary: The Liaison
Officer (LO) will be responsible for planning and executing the development of
a wildlife-based conservancy in the Lake Mburo landscape. Working with AWF’s
Uganda program team, the LO will manage the development of the Rurambira
Conservancy. The LO is in charge of effectively engaging the landowners in the
conservancy, involving private sector partners, and partnering with the Uganda
Wildlife Authority in ensuring the long-term viability of the conservancy. S/he
is also responsible for engaging the appropriate expertise to develop the
conservancy in a way that is environmentally, socially, and economically
viable.
Key Duties and
Responsibilities:  
  • Offer technical assistance to selected
    landowners in the Rurambira Conservancy in managing wildlife on their land
    through development of a conservancy.
  • Support the development of alternative
    livelihoods to enhance the economic value of the conservancy.
  • Expand the conservancy area by further
    engaging additional potential conservancy members.
  • Enlist the engagement of private sector
    partners in supporting the conservancy.
  • Assist in and support the preparation and
    submission of relevant Work Plans guided by baseline and field information
    and in collaboration with stakeholders for approval.
  • Provide Program monitoring and management
    oversight in the implementation of Work Plans and Business Plans.
  • Work with the local government and
    landowners to organize and conduct community sensitization meetings to
    mobilize and promote understanding of program activities and outputs at
    different levels of implementation in target villages.
  • Act as a liaison between the AWF and all
    stakeholders in the Lake Mburo area.
  • Other tasks as may reasonably be required
    by the Country Director, Uganda.



Qualifications, Skills and
Experience:
  • The applicant for the African Wildlife
    Foundation (AWF) Liaison Officer job placement must also hold a Bachelor’s
    degree in relevant fields including veterinary medicine, agriculture, natural
    resource management, and related subjects with field experience in
    planning, field extension services, implementation, and monitoring
    programs is preferable.
  • Five years’ experience in the rural
    economy with a focus on agricultural production and/or post-harvest or in
    other rural/veterinary enterprise development work or natural resource
    management.
  • Experience in engaging partners and other
    stakeholders in natural resource management planning and/or livestock
    extension.
  • Experience and competence in implementing
    participatory techniques for mobilizing rural communities.
  • Prior experience in USAID programs an
    added advantage.
  • Excellent verbal and written
    communications skills; fluent in oral and written English.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and practice in
    livestock and/or agricultural extension and planning or natural resource
    management.
  • Outstanding technical skills in at least
    one area of ecology and conservation or animal husbandry.
  • Ability to work both as part of a team and
    independently.
  • Respect for communities, other
    organizations, and stakeholders.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and to
    network strategically with a wide group of partners.
  • Have basic computer, especially MS Office,
    and internet skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and meet
    deadlines.
  • Ability to fulfill mandatory AWF
    operations and financial procedures.
  • Strong interest in and understanding of
    conservation.
  • Knowledge in GIS applications and use is
    an added advantage.
