The African Wildlife Foundation (AWF), founded in 1961 as the African
Wildlife Leadership Foundation, is an international conservation organization
that focuses on critically important landscapes in Africa. When founded in
1961, the purpose was to train Africans to maintain game reserves
professionally, ensuring an adequate supply of game for hunters on safari.
Later, the mandate evolved to supporting western scientists in studies of
protected animals in their natural habitat. More recently, the focus has been
on developing sustainable systems that benefit both animals and local human
communities.
Job Summary: The Clerk of
Works will live on-site and act as AWF’s representative in the day-to-day project
management for its new school in Kidepo, Uganda.
Key Duties and
Responsibilities:  
  • Review contract documents to ensure
    contractors have full understanding of documents.
  • Act as liaison between the supervising
    consultants and contractor.
  • Supervise and control of quality of
    materials, workmanship and execution.
  • Where required by the Client, conduct an
    inspection of the areas of Geremech and Sarachom to procure required
    materials for the construction project.
  • Conduct on-site observation and
    spot-checks of work in progress.
  • Attend and keep detailed records of all
    site meetings and any other meetings.
  • Maintain a high level of integrity and
    independence.
  • Follow up the progress and timeliness of
    construction and installation activities.
  • Prepare and issue site instructions
    related to quality of materials and workmanship.
  • Review and report on the contractor’s
    health and safety plans, inclusive of adherence to national worker-related
    laws, local by-laws and regulations, and ensure compliance.
  • Carry out regular measurements required
    for checking contractor’s valuations.
  • Prepare weekly, monthly, and quarterly
    progress reports for all site matters.
  • Ensure that up-to-date drawings are
    available on-site at all times.
  • Ensure the progress is maintained
    according to the building programme.
  • Prepare and maintain on-site a
    log/schedule of all tests carried out on-site.
  • Prepare and maintain on-site a log of all
    samples required for the works
  • Attend the pre-handover inspection and
    ensure that all snags are attended to.
  • Review as-built drawings to ensure they
    are consistent with the works executed on site.
  • Perform any other duties as may be
    assigned.



Qualifications, Skills and
Experience:
  • The applicant for the African Wildlife
    Foundation (AWF) Clerk of Works job placement must also hold a Higher
    Diploma in Building and Civil Engineering or Degree in Civil Engineering
    or construction management from a recognized academic institution; Higher
    Diploma holders should have at least 5 years of experience in supervising
    building construction works including at least four years of drafting
    experience.
  • Degree holders applying for this position
    must present evidence of having attained an ordinary or higher diploma and
    have at least 3 years work experience.
  • Working knowledge of electrical and
    mechanical works.
  • Demonstrated experience working on
    projects of at least three billion Uganda Shillings.
  • Computer skills especially AutoCAD, MS
    Word, MS Excel and MS Project.
  • Excellent people and team skills.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical decision making skills.
  • Ability to work in a rural setting.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and
    Kiswahili.
  • Ability to drive a motorbike.
