registered Christian Non Governmental Organization
(NGO) which specialises in the
rescue, rehabilitation, reconciliation, resettlement and follow-up of children
living on the streets. The overall objective of DP is to have a society where
every child has a chest to rest their head on and a place to call home.
Job Summary: The House
Parent will be a live-in parent and will supervise and care for children by
helping to create a homely atmosphere, helping resident-children towards more
independent living, deal with any problems that arise, provide a sense of
stability, and act as a source of advice and counsel for children. In addition,
provide minimal supervision of security-guards; as well perform minimal duties
in the Creative Learning Centre.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Keeping
    regular checks on the resident children to ensure that everyone who should
    be there is present
  • Dealing
    with children concerns about their accommodation and living arrangements;
  • Liaising
    with DP social welfare and health department  
  • Helping
    child-residents to develop life skills to enable them to function
    successfully within the wider community, e.g., meal preparation, personal
    hygiene
  • Packing
    school bags for child-residents
  • Monitoring
    and reporting the spiritual activities of the children
  • Work
    with and monitor the work of the Holistic Carers
  • Following
    up health visits for each child
  • Keeping
    updated inventory list of items in homes & provide for TRH
    administrator and/or Administration Dept.
  • Responsible
    for washing, drying, and  ironing
    children’s clothes
  • In
    Kitchen: Cooking and preparing food, feeding children, setting cleaning
    times
  • Carry
    out cleaning duties: Making beds, cleaning toilets and play area, cleaning
    inside & outside resident house
  • In
    the Nursery, responsible for bathing supervision
  • Responsible
    for ensuring children’s clothes are clean
  • Making
    sure children keep bedtimes
  • Nurturing
    the children (monitoring, supervision, changing diapers)
  • Supervising
    night-guards; make sure they are on post/duty
  • Responsible
    for storage of security guard equipment
  • Participate
    and involve the children in craft-training, poultry, vegetable growing,
    other project-training
  • Under
    the supervision of the Teacher, assist in the supervision, care, &
    teaching of children from age 3-15
  • Compose
    written reports on the spiritual activity of each child
  • Maintain
    daily, weekly, and/or monthly logs
  • Responsible
    for reporting any symptoms of child abuse, abnormal behaviors, injuries,
    & illnesses
  • Assist
    in the preparation of an individualized plan for each child based on
    assessments & observations
  • Coordinate
    activities in the home



Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The
    applicant for the Dwelling Places House Parent job should have experience/
    professional certificate in the social work field a plus
  • Must
    be a mature born-again Christian
  • Secondary
    school certificate or equivalent
  • One
    year experience in a school setting is a plus
  • One
    year experience in administrative capacity a plus
  • Experience
    providing care to infants/toddlers, preschool children, and teenagers
  • Ability
    to observe, see, hear and respond to children’s needs, emergencies, &
    conflicts
  • Must
    have the ability to nurture relationships with children & must be
    sensitive to the child’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics
  • Awareness
    of the cognitive, social, and physical needs of children
  • Able
    to handle the responsibilities and routine stress often associated with
    child care services
  • Able
    to lift up to 30 pounds
  • Ability
    to communicate verbally and in writing in English so that children,
    parents, & staff members are clearly able to understand and respond
  • Excellent
    organizational and time management skills; ability to carry out multiple
    responsibilities simultaneously
  • Maintain
    confidentiality of records and information of children
  • Bilingual
    in Luganda and English
