Head (HIV and Cancer Epidemiology)
Research Unit on AIDS was established following a request in 1988 from the
Uganda Government to the British Government for collaboration on the research
of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection and AIDS (Acquired
Immunodeficiency. The Unit is a center of excellence in HIV/AIDS related
research. It conducts large-scale epidemiological and intervention studies,
clinical trials, virological and immunological research and behavioural
studies, and has generated a wealth of research results that have been used to
inform policy and practice that have led to a large number of scientific
publications in peer reviewed journals over time.
B will offer scientific leadership and ensure timely and credible execution of
project activities
- Coordinate studies including development of
protocols, SOPs, preparing and maintaining Site Investigator file to
ensure timely and accurate data collection. - Make scientific contributions through grant
applications, publications, proposal reviews, conference abstracts, seminar
presentations and site journal clubs. - Manage human resources including recruitment,
training, appraisals, allocation of duties and leave approvals for staff. - Managing project resources (approvals of
finances for petty expenses,
supply requisitions for medicines & supplies, budgets, reviewing
project expenses) - Ensuring ethical conduct of studies (preparing
regulatory documents for IRB approvals, ensuring consent process, liaise
with study monitor for study monitoring) - Coordinate communications (regular reports to supervisor,
collaborators, meetings with study staff, Teleconferences with
collaborators) - Participate in scientific writing
- Support and conduct statistical analyses for
planned papers. - Facilitate the use of data to inform strategy and
policy-decision making, advocacy and communication activities - Work in close collaboration with other Unit
scientists (programme leaders, project leaders and other scientists)
- The ideal candidate must hold a Medical Degree
or relevant degree in
statistics, demography, public health or social science. - Master’s degree in Epidemiology, Statistics or
Public Health is of an added advantage. - At least three years’ experience in clinical
practice preferably in Clinical research setting. - Experience at a supervisory level preferably medical staff.
- Some experience of successfully managing a
team, including developing junior staff. - Ability to present scientific results to peers
and colleagues. - Having evidence of contributing to high impact
peer-reviewed publications in health related research is of an added
advantage.
