About Us:
The MRC/UVRI Uganda Virus
Research Unit on AIDS was established following a request in 1988 from the
Uganda Government to the British Government for collaboration on the research
of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection and AIDS (Acquired
Immunodeficiency. The Unit is a center of excellence in HIV/AIDS related
research. It conducts large-scale epidemiological and intervention studies,
clinical trials, virological and immunological research and behavioural
studies, and has generated a wealth of research results that have been used to
inform policy and practice that have led to a large number of scientific
publications in peer reviewed journals over time.
Job Summary: The Scientist
B will offer scientific leadership and ensure timely and credible execution of
project activities
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate studies including development of
    protocols, SOPs, preparing and maintaining Site Investigator file to
    ensure timely and accurate data collection.
  • Make scientific contributions through grant
    applications, publications, proposal reviews,
    conference abstracts, seminar
    presentations and site journal clubs.
  • Manage human resources including recruitment,
    training, appraisals, allocation of duties and leave approvals for staff.
  • Managing project resources (approvals of
    finances for petty expe
    nses,
    supply requisitions for medicines & supplies, budgets, reviewing
    project expenses)
  • Ensuring ethical conduct of studies (preparing
    regulatory documents for IRB approvals, ensuring consent process, liaise
    with study monitor for study monitoring)
  • Coordinate communications (regular reports to supervisor,
    collaborators, meetings with study staff, Teleconferences with
    collaborators)
  • Participate in scientific writing
  • Support and conduct statistical analyses for
    planned papers.
  • Facilitate the use of data to inform strategy and
    policy-decision making, advocacy and communication activities
  • Work in close collaboration with other Unit
    scientists (programme leaders, project leaders and other scientists)



Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The ideal candidate must hold a Medical Degree
    or relevant degr
    ee in
    statistics, demography, public health or social science.
  • Master’s degree in Epidemiology, Statistics or
    Public Health is of an added advantage.
  • At least three years’ experience in clinical
    practice preferably in Clinical research setting.
  • Experience at a supervisory level preferably medical staff.
  • Some experience of successfully managing a
    team, including developing junior staff.
  • Ability to present scientific results to peers
    and colleagues.
  • Having evidence of contributing to high impact
    peer-reviewed publications in health related research is of an added
    advantage.
