lives. We work with local people affected by conflict to improve their safety
and sense of security. We do this by supporting effective policies and
practices through advocacy, research and policy development, and through
supporting the actions of others. We have a strong thematic focus to our
conflict prevention work prioritising: people’s security and access to justice
services; gender norms that cause and perpetuate violent conflict; the impact
of external conflict drivers including weapons flows; conflict-sensitive
political, economic, development, and security engagement; and inclusive and
accountable governance and peacebuilding processes.
Job Summary: The Participatory
Action Research (PAR) Advisor will work with select programme teams in adapting
our methodology/tools to their contexts. The post holder will work in collaboration
with the Organisational Development and Programme Support Units, and
accompanying programme and partner staff in the use of tools, analysis and
adaptation of programming.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Tasked with adapting and/or designing
    participatory action research (PAR) tools for community programmes in
    Yemen and East Africa, together with staff and partners.
  • Accompaniment of staff and partners in the use
    of tools/methodologies, including regular check-ins, debriefs and collective analysis of findings.
  • Mentor and train staff and partners in PAR
    methodologies and tools.
  • Ensure quality control of findings, analysis
    and processes, and take necessary measures to address/improve quality and
    community focus.
  • Work closely with the Yemen and East Africa
    programmes team to ensure that information coming from community research and action planning informs the
    projects and the programme vision.
  • Work closely with the Organisational
    Development Unit, feed into organisational thinking about PAR and the
    systematisation of methodologies and tools.
  • Ensure relevant documentation is stored, ensuring security of participants
    and confidentiality of information provided.



Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
  • The
    applicant for the Saferworld Participatory Action Research (PAR) Advisor
    career placement should preferably have previous experience
    in designing and using participatory action research (PAR) methodologies
    in community programming
  • Previous experience of supporting and accompanying staff and partners in
    developing and using PAR tools
  • Training and facilitation skills
  • Broad knowledge and understanding of the
    challenges faced in project implementation in conflict affected
    environments
  • Fluency in English and Arabic both written and spoken.
  • High level communication skills, including
    experience of communicating effectively across cultures and with diverse
    audiences, both verbally and in writing
  • Strong planning skills
  • Ability to work in a non-partisan and neutral manner, particularly in
    high-stress and highly politicised environments, appreciating gender,
    cultural and ethnic diversity
  • Previous
    experience of providing remote support and accompaniment
  • Experience in Yemen and/or East Africa (Sudan
    and/or South Sudan would be
    an advantage)
  • Experience of working in an INGO that has a
    commitment to partnership or works with partners.
  • Understanding (experience) in volatile
    environments
