Promoting Equality in African
Schools (PEAS UK) is a UK-based charity with a mission ‘to unlock the potential
of Africa by expanding access to affordable quality secondary education.’ We
run the fastest growing network of sustainably financed secondary schools in
Africa. We currently have a network of 24 schools across Uganda and Zambia,
educating around 8,000 students. PEAS  is supported by major corporate,
government and private funders and our innovative financial model is pioneering
in the field of public private partnerships in development education.
Job Summary: The IT
Officer will be responsible for providing support for all IT-related needs
across PEAS Uganda including the Head office, regions and a network of 28
schools. The role is part of the operations team and a key player in the
implementation of the IT strategy, providing technical hands on solutions to
maintaining operational infrastructure and information management systems at
headquarters, regions and schools. At a strategic level the role will work
others to leverage on developments in school and financial information and
knowledge management systems, existing VPNs, hardware and software to
strengthen efficiency in operations at all levels of PEAS Uganda.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate
    all IT related support at Country level; troubleshooting and providing
    first level solutions to all technical and operational problems
    experienced by users at school’s, regions and head office to ensure
    systems are run effectively across the country programme.
  • Deploy
    and provide user training on new and existing equipment, and management
    systems when required.
  • Ensuring
    that all equipment used across the network, region and headquaters is
    maintained regularly to enhance its performance.
  • Working
    with the Director Operations and other relevant teams to support the
    implementation and operationalization of the Country ICT strategy and policies
    to deliver a fit for purpose IT function across PEAS Uganda
  • Assess
    IT needs across the country and identify efficient and effective
    opportunities to improve including offering routine response implementing
    change processes as required.
  • Maintain
    functional and efficient Internet and network structure, network assets,
    and document problems and resolution for future reference; regularly
    monitoring the whole network operational performance.
  • Provide
    support in the implementation, roll-out and upkeep of the School
    Information Management System. This will entail considerable time in the
    field visiting schools.
  • To
    provide operational leadership for and management of communication
    equipment and information management systems such as emails, ensuring
    safety of information across the country, including supporting teams
    develop strategies to share information and peripherals in a cost
    efficient and effective manner.
  • Work
    closely with external service providers for additional support in
    obtaining the right IT needs for the country programme and liaising with
    others to define specifications of the needs being sourced in line with
    procurement guidelines.
  • Identify
    and study on a regular basis new IT equipment and software suitable for
    PEAS operation and advise management on acquisition of such innovations.
  • Perform
    any other duties as assigned by the line Manager



Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The
    ideal candidate must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in IT/Computer science,
    Computer/Software Engineering or other related fields.
  • Professional
    certifications in CCNA or CCNP, MCSA, CompTIA Linux+ is desirable.
  • A
    minimum of five years’ experience working with a busy customer-facing IT
    support.
  • Experience
    working with a school information management system and education related
    IT software and Programmes
  • Proficiency
    in dealing with Layer III Switches, Routers and Ubiquiti Equipment
    high-end Servers, Cabling, Racks, Firewalls, LAN, WAN troubleshooting,
    TCP/IP, PPP, DNS, Virtualization, Fiber Optics and other experience with non-PC
    hardware (tablets) and non-Microsoft operating systems e.g. Linux (Ubuntu)
    are essential.
  • High
    level knowledge in implementing and managing low power-consuming computers
    such as thin/zero clients including but not limited to N-Computing, dell
    Wyse and HP.
  • Knowledge
    of ERPs and Odoo frameworks.
  • High
    level of proficiency in implementation of systems using open source
    platforms like Pfsense, Debian/Ubuntu
  • Show
    commitment to PEAS philosophy, aims and policies (especially child
    protection).
  • Manages
    resources and deadlines with minimum supervision and shows evidence of
    high level of planning skills and initiative
  • Good
    communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Recommends
    and implements improvements and able to influence ways of working.
  • Responsible,
    flexible, adaptable and a good team player
