Eastern Private Sector Development
Centre (EPSEDEC) is a non-governmental development organization whose mission
is: to work with communities to overcome poverty through business development
services, sustainable economic empowerment, and the development of Micro, Small
and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). EPSEDEC works with other development partners
in implementation of projects that address economic development challenges in
Uganda. EPSEDEC’s activities are anchored in the Government’s National
Development Plan (NDP) and it also contributes to achievement of the UN
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1, 2 and 8 that aim to end poverty and
hunger in all its forms; to achieve food security and improved nutrition by
promoting sustainable agriculture; and to promote sustained, inclusive and
sustainable economic growth.
Job Summary: The Field
Extension Worker (FEW) is part of a project team but responsible for ensuring
timely and quality implementation of the planned project activities in his/her
area of operation, integration of market-oriented farmers and (farmer-led)
agribusiness groups into the commodity value chain using the pulling power of
upstream lead firms or off-takers, to enhance productivity of market-oriented
farmers in the commodity value chains; and to improve availability and uptake
of public and private support services related to the core commodity value
chains. The successful candidates will have to either work in the Rice value
chain in Butaleja District or in the “Irish” Potato value chain in Kapchorwa
and Kween Districts; therefore they must indicate their District of preference
in the applications.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Planning and Forecasting:
  • Formulate
    seasonal action plans based on the groups needs as a guide for continuous
    planned agricultural activities,
  • Ensuring
    that the agricultural activities are accurately scheduled; share these
    schedules with the farmers. Guide farmers on prevailing market and
    production conditions, Develop and share with farmers, reports and
    feedback on implemented activities including a simplified income statement
    for the target enterprises in form of: production costs, attained
    yields/output, attained income and profits.
Project Implementation:
  • Ensure
    growth and development of the farmers groups; such that these farmers groups
    graduate to operate as self-reliant producer organizations by end of the
    project
  • Assess
    seasonal learning needs for the participating farmers to ensure that the
    extension training provided in that season addresses these identified
    learning needs,
  • Mentor
    and train farmers on the specific learning needs identified for a given
    season
  • Be
    able to use ICT applications while working with the farmer groups in the
    respective area of operation such as use of online data entry/collection
    software.
Monitoring and Reporting:
  • Verify
    all records collected from groups for project activities before submission
    to supervisor,
  • Respond
    to/address questions arising from his/her supervising department regarding
    the submitted tools, Produce activity completion reports for all project
    activities implemented to the supervisor.
  • Participate
    in the project M&E events such as farmer field learning days, midterm
    & end of project evaluation.



 Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The
    applicant should preferably hold a Diploma in Agricultural Extension
    related field; with ability to conduct on field trials and demos, and
    oversee their utilization by farmer groups towards adopting modern
    practices of climate smart agriculture; skills in modern crop production,
    including soil, water & tree resources conservation, plus selection
    and multiplication of improved agricultural inputs; ability to support
    farmers initiate agricultural oriented micro – enterprises (household
    IGPs), plus other Development Approaches, Practices and Skills.
  • At
    least two years of practical field experience in implementing agriculture
    projects preferably in the Rice and “Irish” Potato value chains.
  • Self starter and able to work under minimum
    supervision
  • Assessment skills and knowledge in Farmer
    Institutional Development (FID)
  • Good communication; writing and presentation
    skills
  • Strong computer skills especially in MS excel,
    Word, Power point and Email
    use,
  • He or She should be able to plan ahead, and yet
    accommodate unexpected tasks;
  • Excellent skills in networking with communities
    and local leaders, flexible and understands field logistics with its
    challenges.
  • Good security awareness and able to pay attention to details
  • Ability to speak the local language of the
    designated community is desirable (either in Butaleja or in Kapchorwa and
    Kween Districts)
  • Ability to ride a motorcycle
