About Us:
The MRC/UVRI Uganda Virus Research Unit on AIDS was established
following a request in 1988 from the Uganda Government to the British
Government for collaboration on the research of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency
Virus) infection and AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency. The Unit is a center of
excellence in HIV/AIDS related research. It conducts large-scale
epidemiological and intervention studies, clinical trials, virological and
immunological research and behavioural studies, and has generated a wealth of
research results that have been used to inform policy and practice that have
led to a large number of scientific publications in peer reviewed journals over
time.
Job Summary: The Medical
Officer will be tasked with the recruitment, clinical evaluation and care of
research participants
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Participant
    in recruitment and retention- Obtains informed consent, screens for study
    eligibility, enrols and follows up study participants
  • Clinical
    care- Provides clinical care to study participants and conducts referrals
    as appropriate
  • Data
    collection and management- Collects data as required by the protocol,
    completes source documents and CRFs and submits them for data
    entry, and resolves queries
  • Prescription
    of Investigational Product (IP) and other concomitant medication –
    Prescribes and where appropriate administers IP
  • Administrative-
    supervises other study team members
  • Conduct
    of continued professional development (CPD) training activities and
    maintenance of documentation of such trainings
  • Preparation
    of progress reports to UVRI REC and regulatory bodies (UNCST and NDA) when
    required.
  • PI
    designee duties- performs other duties assigned by the Principal
    Investigator



Qualifications, Skills and
Experience: 
  • The
    applicant must hold a Bachelor’s degree in medicine and surgery
  • Other
    relevant training e.g. short courses in epidemiology and biostatistics,
    management of specific conditions e.g. HIV, STIs, TB etc will be of added
    advantage
  • At
    least two years’ experience in clinical practice
  • Previous
    experience in a clinical trial setting will be an added advantage
  • Medical
    knowledge with ability to diagnose and treat common acute and chronic
    illnesses
  • Knowledge
    of preventive health-care interventions including for HIV/AIDS
  • Understanding
    of ICH/GCP guidelines for human research
  • Computer
    Competency including proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
