National Roads Authority (UNRA)
and Social Safeguards
Parliament; The Uganda National Authority Act, No. 15 of 2006. UNRA became
operational on 1st July 2008. The
mandate of UNRA is to develop and maintain the national roads network, advise
Government on general roads policy and contribute to addressing of transport
concerns, among others.
Officer Occupational Safety and Health will be responsible for reviewing,
evaluating and analyzing work environments and designing programs, policies and
procedures that prevent harm to individuals which may be caused by physical,
chemical and biological agents or ergonomic factors. S/He will report directly
to the Head Environment and Social Safeguard and work closely with the
Directorate of Human Resource.
Responsibilities:
- Identify hazards in the workplace,
projects and demonstrate how to recognize and predict hazards; - Design and implement safety and health
procedures and processes that help protect workers from potentially
hazardous work conditions; - Inspect and evaluate workplace, project
environments, equipment and practices for compliance with government
health and safety standards and regulations as well as best international
practice; - Conduct audits of hazardous substances on
project site and in working environments by collecting samples of dust,
gases, vapors and other potentially toxic materials for analysis; - Provide procedures for proper disposal of
waste and waste management; - Conduct safety training for staff and
demonstrate the use of safety equipment; - Inspect specified project areas to ensure
the presence of safety equipment, fire prevention equipment and first aid
supplies; - Develop and update project emergency
response plans and procedures; - Monitor the adequacy of office furniture,
ventilation, equipment, lighting and other conditions that could affect
employee health, comfort or performance; - Investigate and maintain a log of
accidents or near misses that occur on projects, workplace and uncovering
patterns in accident data.
Experience:
- The applicant for the UNRA Senior Officer
Occupational Safety and Health career opportunity should hold a Bachelor’s
Degree in Mechanical or Chemistry or Environmental Management or related
field; - A minimum of five years of professional
experience in Safety and Health preferably in the road sector; - Possession of NEBOSH (National Examination
Board in Occupational Safety and Health) . Added Advantage will be given
to candidates with knowledge of International safeguards and Environmental
sustainability Policy. - Excellent communication and interpersonal
skills; - High skills in building and managing
relationships in a diverse working environment; - Impeccable level of integrity;
- Good track record of outstanding
performance; - Strong presentation and negotiation skills
are preferred.
