NGO with its headquarters at the Bronx Zoo, New York, USA has been operating in
Uganda for more than 50 years. WCS works to conserve biological diversity and
ecosystem function through applied research, management of natural resources
and providing technical support to Ugandan organizations and agencies.
About Project:
Wildlife Conservation Society with funding from D.N. Batten Foundation
is implementing a project titled: Engaging Chinese Enterprises to Reduce Demand
for Illegal Wildlife Products. The overall goal of the project is to develop a
scalable and replicable model that achieves demand reduction for ivory products
via behavior change in high-risk Chinese businesses operating in Uganda. WCS
aims to develop a practical engagement approach to significantly reduce the
demand for Ivory and other wildlife products through targeted initiatives in collaboration
with the governments of Uganda and China.
Job Summary: The Corporate
Engagement and Communication Manager will lead the corporate engagement and
communications activities on a specified project or projects. The position is
to develop WCS Uganda capacity of effectively engaging Chinese businesses to
reduce involvement of Chinese nationals in the illegal trade of ivory and other
wildlife products in furtherance of the aims and objectives of this project.
The successful candidate will work with the WCS Uganda and WCS China programs
to;
·        
Develop Social Behavior Change Communication
(SBCC) frameworks, messages, materials and activities;
·        
Provide high quality technical support in the
planning, development, implementation and reporting of the project’s corporate,
government and media engagements both in China and Uganda;
·        
Collaborating with other communications &
Stakeholder engagement functions and execute partnership agreements; and 4)
engage in research, mapping illegal wildlife trafficking hotspots in Uganda.
Key Duties and
Responsibilities:  
·        
Steer the development and delivery of effective
corporate engagement strategies and campaigns related to reduction of consumer
demand for illegal wildlife products.
·        
Identify strategic corporate engagement issues
and effective implementation of appropriate plans and actions.
·        
Provide day-to-day direction of all corporate
engagement and communication with Chinese Enterprises and Chinese community
·        
The jobholder will also facilitate IWT/CWT
studies and communication of study results
·        
Lead and develop all corporate engagement
elements of the project
·        
Formulate strategies for managing and
negotiating positive outcomes where complex stakeholder, particularly foreign
investors and community, engagement matters exist
·        
Steer the delivery of corporate engagement in
providing coaching and mentoring to staff involved in engaging the external
stakeholder community.
·        
Collaborate with and build upon the efforts of
partner institutions and civil society activities in Uganda through presentation
of an evidence-based framework and outcomes for the Chinese engagements to
reduce Ivory Demand
·        
Manage the delivery of engagement and
communications services by external service providers.
·        
Prepare and manage budgets and timelines to
achieve the engagement and communications objectives of the project/projects.



Qualifications, Skills and
Experience:
·        
The ideal candidate for this career opportunity
should hold a master’s degree in business management and administration,
marketing, mass communication, environmental law, with two years’ experience in
corporate governance.
·        
Previous exposure and experience in consumer
surveying techniques, quantitative and qualitative survey methods, use of mass
media and social networks to influence and gain public support, the negotiation
and formation of partnerships across interest groups, and/or working with
government agencies, civil society organizations and the Chinese business
community in Uganda.
·        
A minimum of eight years of professional
experience designing, implementing, and leading social and behavior change
campaigns, including experience with social marketing, strategic
communications, and/or behavior change communications.
·        
Significant exposure and experience in managing
effective corporate engagement activities Including stakeholder management,
corporate events, political engagement, consultation and campaign management.
·        
The ideal candidate must also have outstanding
verbal and written skills both In English and Chinese
·        
Ability to produce reports and presentations
using raw data when required, along with substantial experience of managing
staff, teams and corporate engagement projects.
·        
In addition, the candidate must be able to
provide, leadership to the project team and be able to explore new approaches
to adopt a high level of collaboration within the organization and with our
business to achievement of project objectives.
·        
Proven background in a wide range of engagement
and communications activities including work with communities, government,
industry and other stakeholders.
·        
Proven experience in the delivery of
communications strategies, particularly in relation difficult and complex
issues with sometimes competing stakeholder interests.
·        
Familiarity with media, marketing, event
management and digital communications.
·        
Knowledge of government processes and business
operations.
·        
Ability to manage contractors and staff.     
·        
Excellent written and oral communication and
presentation skills.
·        
Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution and
negotiation skills.
·        
Demonstrated ability to apply strategic level
thinking, problem solving and decision making to the resolution of complex
problems.
·        
Demonstrated ability to critically analyze and
review consumer data and other data sources to develop concepts for
implementation of behavior change initiatives
·        
Highly passionate and experienced in
biodiversity conservation issues and sustainability
·        
Possess basic understanding of the environmental
laws both in Uganda and China as well as state owned corporation systems,
policies, procedures and practices.
·        
Reasonable understanding of diplomatic protocols
and respect for cultural differences.
·        
Proven ability to proactively drive the
Corporate engagement and communications through strong coordination and
collaboration skills.
·        
Ability to work under pressure meeting deadlines
whilst still providing high standard outputs
·        
Willingness to travel in Uganda and
internationally for relevant meetings.
·        
Strong people management skills to motivate,
build capacity and inspire staff and stakeholders, high levels of integrity and
credibility.
·        
Computer literacy skills i.e. Proficient in
Microsoft Office (i.e. Excel, Word and PowerPoint)
