About UNHCR:
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was
established on December 14, 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly.
UNHCR’s mandate under the Statute of the Office of the United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees is to lead and co-ordinate action for international
protection to refugees; seek permanent solutions for the problems of refugees
and safeguard refugee rights and well-being. UNHCR has an additional mandate
concerning issues of statelessness, as it is given a designated role under
Article 11 of the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness.
Job Summary: The Land
Surveyor Assistant will provide assistance in the domain of site planning,
shelter, infrastructure, etc.
Key Duties and
Responsibilities:  
  • The incumbent will conduct land survey and
    topographical mapping for new and existing refugee settlements including
    but not limited to roads, plots and blocks boundaries, infrastructure
    utilities, shelters, buildings and facilities, flood prone areas swamp,
    rivers, wades etc. in accordance with UNHCR needs, design requirements,
    standards and applicable local and international codes of practice and
    utilizing relevant equipment and software;
  • Prepare geo-referenced data, charts,
    plots, maps, drawings, profiles, records and documents related to surveys;
    keeps records of the results of surveys, including the shape, contour,
    elevation and dimension of land or land features, shelters, buildings
    & facilities, infrastructure, roads, etc.;
  • Assist in setting up settlement sites;
    conducts surveys in order to establish agreed boundaries for settlements,
    properties (including those of the host community as may be relevant),
    roads, infrastructure, public facilities and spaces, etc.;
  • Pay regular and emergency visits to the
    sites to solve surveying problems to ensure continuity of operations,
    identifies and records any quality problems, recommends remedial actions
    as necessary and verifies that his/her comments and recommendations are
    implemented;
  • Routinely verify the accuracy of survey
    data, including measurements and calculations conducted at survey sites;
  • Supervise the works of and provide
    guidance for the partners Land Surveyors A, ensures they are equipped with
    the required knowledge to perform their job efficiently;
  • Work closely, through the direct
    supervisor, with other sectors (WASH, Environment, Infrastructure,
    Construction, etc.) and coordinates with District Local Governments and
    their professional staff; provide assistance as may be directed by
    supervisor; – Performs such other duties as may be assigned.
Key Performance Indicators:
  • Reacts to needs as directed by the
    supervisor at short notice
  • Develops good work relationship with all
    stakeholders including District Local Governments, Partners, refugee
    community, etc
  • Level of drawings produced are in conformity
    with local and international practices – Submits regular weekly or monthly
    reports to supervisor
  • Completes tasks within the timeline set by
    supervisor



Qualifications, Skills and
Experience:
  • The ideal candidate for the United Nations
    UNHCR Land Surveyor Assistant job placement should hold a university
    degree in land surveying or related discipline
  • A minimum of three years experience in
    land surveying and topographic mapping Key
  • Ability to take initiatives
  • Demonstrated ability to work with
    different surveying equipment, including GPS, Total Station, Theodolite,
    Level, Plan Table and other related equipment
  • Previous experience in relevant Softwares
    (Autocad, Infraworks, Global Mapper, ArcGIS, Open Street Map, others)
  • Competent Knowledge of Humanitarian Site
    planning Standards (such as The Sphere Project and others)
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines
  • Excellent coordination and communication
    skills
  • Proficiency in the use of surveying
    software
