About UNHCR:
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was
established on December 14, 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly.
UNHCR’s mandate under the Statute of the Office of the United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees is to lead and co-ordinate action for international
protection to refugees; seek permanent solutions for the problems of refugees
and safeguard refugee rights and well-being. UNHCR has an additional mandate
concerning issues of statelessness, as it is given a designated role under
Article 11 of the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness.
Job Summary: The
Construction Engineer will support the United Nations High Commissioner for
Refugees (UNHCR) by implementing and supervising  construction projects assigned by UNHCR in
order to ensure that projects are delivered to the quality desired, within
budget and timelines. The jobholder will manage the day-to-day activities in
the construction sites assigned to in order to ensure that work processes as
designed and comply with the established standards and procedures
Key Duties and Responsibilities:  
  • Conducts site surveys as may be needed
  • Prepares cost estimates for the
    construction projects including detailed Bills of Quantities
  • Regularly monitors progress of the works
    against agreed timelines and take corrective measures if necessary to
    ensure the works are completed on time
  • Verifies interim and final payments and
    ensures that the works are completed within agreed budget
  • Follow up on projects assigned to
    including site handover, schedule, re-measurements, quality control,
    quantity control and variation/change orders (if necessary).
  • Ensures that all necessary tests are
    conducted by contractors/partners and are in compliance with the
    specifications.
  • Takes corrective measures in case of
    failure to meet specified results. Carries out day-to-day site
    supervision of the construction sites and issue written instructions to
    contractors/partners as may be needed.
  • Ensures that specifications are strictly
    adhered to by contractors/partners.
  • Maintains daily and weekly site records.
  • Ensures that site records are maintained
    throughout the project and are handed to supervisor at project completion
  • Prepares and submits monthly progress
    reports to supervisor
  • Prepares with all relevant stakeholders,
    safety, health and environmental procedures to ensure healthy and safe
    work environment.
  • Performs other related duties as may be
    required



Qualifications, Skills and
Experience:
  • The ideal candidate for the United Nations
    UNHCR Construction Engineer job placement should hold a Bachelor’s degree
    in Civil or Architectural Engineering
  • At least four years’ experience in
    supervising construction projects
  • Excellent command of English Language
    (Written and Spoken)
  • Good report writing skills
  • Computer skills including AutoCAD
  • Experience in the management of construction
    sites
