The Refugee Law Project (RLP) is an outreach project of the School of
Law, Makerere University. Our Mission is to empower asylum seekers, refugees,
deportees, IDPs and host communities to enjoy their human rights and lead
dignified lives. Refugee Law Project’s work is currently structured in five
thematic areas: Access to Justice; Conflict, Transitional Justice &
Governance (CTJ&G), Gender & Sexuality; Mental Health &
Psychosocial Wellbeing; and Media for Social Change.
Job Summary: The Driver/
Logistician will drive and maintain organisational vehicles and ensure overall
safety. The driver will provide logistical support to RLP staff in execution of
their duties.
Key Duties and
Responsibilities:   
Direct Support:
  • Drive the Project vehicle for the
    transportation of authorized personnel/Programme staff within the defined
    locations, ensuring that all staff adhere to safety requirements
  • The Logistician/ Driver in line with the
    existent RLP guidelines, will support procurement, obtaining of necessary
    procurement documentation and execution of the various logistic related
    tasks as instructed by the responsible officer
  • Keep track and comply with assigned
    vehicle maintenance/repair schedule
  • Perform support services to the project
    activities, like delivery of mail, payments, documents and other items
  • During field trips, assist staff in accessing/
    sourcing adequate accommodation and meals
  • Monitoring and Record keeping
  • The Logistician will monitor mileage and
    fuel consumption of the vehicle assigned and keep track of the daily
    consumption to enable a final compilation of a weekly report on the fuel
    consumption
  • Maintain the vehicle logbooks in
    accordance with established administrative procedures.
  • Ensure that vehicle movement log sheets
    are filled and signed by the officer using the vehicle at that moment
  • Exhibit reasonable care in handling the
    assigned vehicle in relation to other external factors like weather,
    traffic rules, road conditions and others and also keep the assigned
    vehicle in an as received basis, reporting any damages, need for repair
    and need for re-supplies as soon as they arise
  • Responsible for the day-to-day maintenance
    of the vehicle, keeping the vehicle in road-worthy, safe and clean working
    condition, and ensure that all necessary action is taken in timely manner
    in case of involvement in accidents in accordance with rules and
    regulations and full respect of government laws
  • Perform minor repairs to mechanical
    equipment such as the Project vehicle and the generator and make
    arrangements for other repairs when necessary
  • Networking and Capacity Building
  • Perform any other logistical or driving
    tasks as may be assigned from time to time;
  • Uphold the RLP’s Code of Conduct at all
    times and constantly consult with other colleagues in similar job category
    on how best to execute and improve job performance.



Qualifications, Skills and
Experience:
  • The ideal candidate for the Refugee Law
    Project (RLP) Driver/ Logistician job opportunity must hold a diploma
    qualification in any discipline
  • Additional training in motor vehicle
    mechanics
  • A minimum of three years of related working
    experience in a similar position
  • Possession of a valid driving permit
  • Good knowledge of project management and
    work with a not-for-profit and NGO is an added advantage
  • Able and willing to travel and work in
    remote areas in challenging circumstances
  • Self-motivated, versatile and adaptable to
    different cultures and people
