meet their basic needs and expand their opportunities to reach their full
potential. Together with our partners, we work in 190 countries and territories

reaching the most vulnerable and excluded children, to the benefit of all
children, everywhere.
Sanitation Officer will actively contribute to the strengthening of WASH in
Schools program in Uganda with support also expected for WASH in Health Care
Facilities. The WASH Officer will be working closely with The Ministry of
Education and Sports and with NGO partners working in WASH in Schools.
Responsibilities: Under the direct
supervision of WASH Manager, the National UN Volunteer will undertake the
following tasks:
- Offer technical support to the Ministry
of Education and Sports in order to develop capacities related to WASH in
Schools - Ensure the availability of accurate,
complete and up-to-date information required for effective WASH in Schools
programme design, implementation, management, monitoring and evaluation
with particular focus on MHM - Actively participate in inter-sectoral
collaboration with other programme colleagues, Education, Health,
Nutrition and Local Government to identify priority needs and appropriate
strategies, share information and provide advocacy for water and
environmental sanitation - Support Adolescent girls and Early
Childhood Development programmes - Ensure effective communication and
networking through partnerships - Work collaboratively with other sections
in incorporation of WASH component to support programme implementation - Render support in the implementation of
WASH in Health Care Facilities - Strengthen the WASH and Health teams by
providing support to implementation of WASH in Health Care Facilities
interventions - Document best practices and working
modalities for WASH in HCFs - Assist in enhancing programme efficiency
and effectiveness through evidence-based approach and implementation
follow-up - Document result and best-practices, and
enhance knowledge management - Document results and lessons learned from
WASH programme implementation and promote knowledge sharing with
counterparts and WASH stakeholders - Take part in the preparation and delivery
of WASH in Schools technical outcomes during fundraising, scoping, development
and implementation phases of WASH initiatives
- Strengthen their knowledge and
understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and
external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance
in events that mark International Volunteer Day); - Be acquainted with and build on
traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country; - Reflect on the type and quality of
voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in
ongoing reflection activities; - Contribute articles/write-ups on field
experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters,
press releases, etc.; - Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for
newly-arrived UN Youth Volunteers; - Promote or advise local groups in the use
of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and
organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever
technically possible.
- The efficiency and efficacy of the support
provided by the UN Volunteer to the WASH program will facilitate the
delivery of concrete and sustainable results in the WASH sector. The
support provided to the WASH in Schools program will directly impact the
improvement of health for the most vulnerable and marginalized children.
Through the assistance provided to WASH in Health Care Facilities the
volunteer is expected to support the documentation of best practices and
working modalities while ensuring effective implementation of interventions
for quality of care improvements - Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD)
perspective is systematically applied, integrated and documented in all
activities throughout the assignment; - A final statement of achievements towards
volunteerism for development during the assignment, such as reporting on
the number of volunteers mobilized, activities participated in and
capacities developed.
Experience:
- The ideal candidate for the United
Nations UNICEF Water & Sanitation Officer job placement should hold a
Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent) in social sciences, civil engineering,
political sciences, public health, water and environmental management or
other WASH related field; - At least three years of demonstrated
experience in WASH; - Motivated to contribute towards peace and
development and to serve others; - Previous experience as a volunteer and/or
experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship)
would be highly regarded; - Computer literacy i.e. working knowledge
of Word, Excel and PowerPoint. - Respect for diversity and adaptability to
other cultures, environments and living conditions; - Fluency in spoken and written English is
required, and knowledge of another UN language is an asset;
- Keeps abreast of new developments in
his/her own occupation and profession - Actively seeks to develop oneself
