About Us:
Uganda Electricity Generation Company Ltd was incorporated in March
2001 under the Companies Act, 2012 on the basis of the Public Enterprises
Reform and Divestiture Act, Cap 98 and Electricity Act, Cap 145 respectively.
UEGCL is wholly owned by the Government of the Republic of Uganda. UEGCL’s key
role is to – carry on the business of electric power generation and sale within
Uganda or for export to neighbouring countries; build, operate and maintain
Electricity Generation Plants; monitor the operation and maintenance of its
Concessioned Assets – Nalubaale and Kiira Power Stations; provide Technical
Support as and when required by the Government of the Republic of Uganda
through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development; organize, support,
encourage and maintain training facilities in technical and related fields,
amongst others.

Job Summary: The Senior Civil
Engineer will monitor civil engineering related works including roads,
construction camps, RC construction, structural steel, deep foundations, dams,
underground caverns, tunnels and related auxiliary components right from review
and approval of designs, construction, witnessing civil engineering related
site and laboratory tests, and participating in final tests and commissioning
of the power plant.

Key Duties and
Responsibilities:
Responsibilities:
- The incumbent will review contracts and
design documents for civil and structural components in coordination with
related disciplines to mitigate project risks. - The jobholder will also review, make
recommendations and cause approval of designs as submitted by the
contractor through the Consultant in accordance with design standards. - Prepare and submit reports on project
activities. - Participate in review of contractor’s
methodologies, Quality Assurance programme and material certifications. - Review as built information and Operation
and Maintenance Manuals. - Carry out an in-depth study of contract
and design documents for civil and structural components in coordination
with related disciplines to develop a clear understanding of project
scope, construction methodologies and early identification of project
risks. - Monitor construction activities and
participate in the inspection of construction equipment and materials as
specified in the contract documents, Contractor’s work plans and best
practice. - The incumbent will monitor the
contractor’s compliance with their ITPs, witness civil engineering and
material tests and review points during construction. - Assist the Project Manager in preparation
of scheduled and ad hoc project reports. - Identify and advise on any unsafe or
incorrect practices and escalate issues where necessary. - Report in writing on delays, observed
quality deficiencies of the works, materials and/or quality issues
relating to construction operations. - Actively participate in review of
contractor’s methodologies, Quality Control programme and material
certification. - Keenly review and comment on all documents
prepared by the contractor including Method Statements, as built
information and Operation and Maintenance Manuals. - Active relationship with the Contractor
and Consultant to ensure the sequencing and quality of work that meets the
design requirements. - Guide the Engineering Design Teams on
quality standards in regards to finishing work and compliance with
specification vis-à-vis resources used/clients expectations - Advise designers on the practical aspects
of engineering installations, to ensure the soundness and practicality of
design proposals - The jobholder will also attend design team
meetings with in-house and external consulting design staff - Attend pre-contract meetings and site
meetings - Witness testing, commissioning and
balancing of engineering installations - Prepare schedules of defects and to
certify rectification of snagging items for project sites - Prepare reports on project activities.
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience:
Experience:
- The applicant should preferably hold a Bachelor’s degree in Civil
engineering (Civil, Structural or other related) from a recognized
university - Possession
of a Post Graduate qualification in Project Management or related
field will be an added advantage - Registration
with a professional body will be an added advantage - A
minimum of five years’ experience in engineering, Project
implementation, Construction Management with demonstrated ability to read
and interpret construction drawings and understanding of temporary and
permanent support structures. Familiarity with procurement of
Infrastructure. Additional Skills: In addition to the experience and
educational requirements listed above - Extensive
working knowledge of civil engineering principles, standards and
regulations relating to construction and inspection; and related computer
software. - Extensive
knowledge and experience of site-based EHS processes, procedures,
standards and regulations. - Excellent
computer literacy skills - Demonstrated
ability to use engineering software would be an advantage. - Strong
analytical and problem solving skills. - Familiar with standard engineering
principles and international code practices - Knowledge
of land survey. - Demonstrate
good temperament, judgment and human relation skills and be able to
communicate with developers, contractors, engineers, surveyors and others
of the public, some of whom at times may be irate and unreasonable - Demonstrate
knowledge in project formulation and undertaking feasibility and detailed
engineering studies Additional Information - Possession
of a valid driving license and experience will be an added advantage.
