a Nation Media Group Company is Uganda’s most influential media house,
operating The Daily Monitor, Saturday Monitor and Sunday Monitor newspapers,
93.3KFM, 90.4 Dembe FM, Nation Couriers and the Monitor Business Directory.
Production Editor will coordinate the subbing and packaging of pages through
careful selection of stories and pictures for publication, to design and layout
pages, ensuring that the stories are edited in line with set editorial
objectives, journalistic ethics, quality and house style, within set deadlines.
Responsibilities:
- The
incumbent attends editorial conferences to review the previous day’s
output and plan the day’s newspaper on the basis of the news docket
presented - Determines
and lists the flow of pages to be followed by sub-editors - Selects
stories and pictures supplied by the News Desk, Bureaus and other sources
and allocates them space in order of their news value - Discusses
the day’s dummy with the advertising copydesk for pagination to
meet editorial expectations - The
jobholder designs, lays out pages and places the stories for editing - Gives
editing instructions for each story and supervises the sub-editors to
ensure that the stories are professionally subbed to the highest quality
and standards within set deadlines. - Checks
the copy, headlines, pictures, captions and pages handled by the
sub-editors to ensure that the editing meets the approved editorial
objectives, house style - Works
closely with the News desk, Photo Editor and the Graphics Editor for
efficient work flow to ensure that all page deadlines are met - Regularly
monitors, guides Sub-editors and recommends them for further training
Experience:
- The applicants for the MPL Deputy
Production Editor career placement should hold a University Degree in Mass Communication or any related field from
an accredited institution. - Diploma
in Journalism - A
minimum of five years’ experience and demonstrated writing and editing
experience in a newsroom. - Excellent
writing and editing skills, with good understanding of editorial
practices, writing and editing requirements in a busy newsroom - Keen
eye for detail, with excellent spelling, grammar and punctuation skills. - Previous
experience working in a very deadline driven environment - Good
organizational skills and ability to work effectively with the team
and collate material from multiple sources - Ability
to track, review and manage team performance effectively - Excellent
interpersonal and communication skills - Very
strong analytical skills - Excellent
writing and reporting skills - Good
understanding of InDesign - Working
knowledge of Photoshop - Computer
literate; experience with Mac software an added advantage - Ability
to work under pressure
