Since its formation in 2003, the University has established itself as one of
the leading Universities in Uganda offering a number of academic programmes in
line with vocational education, teacher training, hands-on engineering, special
needs training, social sciences, pure and applied sciences, entrepreneurship
and management that meet the Market remands and development needs of the
Country. The Strategic Focus Areas of the University include: Teaching
Learning; Research, Innovation and Knowledge Generation; Physical
Infrastructure, Facilities and ICT Development; Institutional Development and
Strategic Marketing.
Legal Officer will mainly provide effective legal service to the University
Council, Management and other organs of the University.
Responsibilities:
- The incumbent will provide legal advice to
the University Council, Management and other organs of the University in
matters of drafting agreements, contracts, memoranda and other legal
documents. - Provide clear oral and written
interpretation of laws and other statutory instruments relating to the
University. - Guide the University’s organs and
officials in compliance with the set policies, regulations and guidelines
governing staff and students of the University. - Work closely with other organizations
managing statutory contributions/ deductions for staff and the University
such as NSSF, URA, among others. - Prepare plans and budgets for the legal
unit and coordinate its implementation. - Carry out legal research and draft legal
submissions and legal briefs to facilitate defence team in court
proceedings. - Supervise, mentor, coach, council and
appraise subordinate staff of the legal unit.
- Prompt Legal documents prepared.
- Prompt legal advice given to staff,
Management and Council. - Legal opinion on policies, regulations and
guidelines regarding Policies and Regulations - Secretariat services provided
- Written laws and other statutory
instruments relating the University interpreted - Legal research conducted and legal
submissions and legal briefs prepared and have staff of the legal unit
supervised, monitored, coached, counseled and appraised
Experience:
- The ideal candidate must hold a Master’s
degree in Law or equivalent legal qualification from a recognized
University/Institution. - Possess an honors Bachelor’s degree in Law
(LLB) from a recognized institution. - Must have a Diploma in Legal Practice.
- The applicant should be an enrolled advocate
of the High Court of Uganda with a valid practicing certificate. - A minimum of six years’ experience as a
practicing Lawyer/State Attorney, three of which should have been at the
rank of Legal Officer or its equivalent in a reputable organization. - Excellent communication, leadership and
interpersonal skills. - Highly proficient in using relevant
computer packages. - Impeccable level of integrity
- Age: Below 55 years

Vitae. - Recent and original copies of their
passport size photographs attached to the application; - Certified copies of academic transcripts,
certificates, and professional qualifications. - Copies of the National Identity Card or
copies of relevant pages of the passport indicating the applicant’s date
of birth. - Names and addresses of three referees who
should be advised to send reference letters direct to the Director Human
Resources under confidential cover.
