Job Summary: The
Communications Officer will primarily ensure effective execution of activities
which will contribute to communication capacity and visibility of UN women’s
work in Uganda. Specifically, the National UN Volunteer is expected to support
the work of the UN Women in Kampala and in the field focusing on implementation
of UN Women communication and advocacy strategy.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Technical Support:
- Work closely with the Operations /
Communications team to organize special events and execute UN Women
communication campaigns - Help with media monitoring and preparation
of media monitoring report. - Work closely with the communication team
to organize and hold press conferences and media briefings. - Support the communication team to produce
newsletters, briefs, brochures and other print materials on a regular
basis - Research and write articles for the
national and regional newsletters. - Support
the communications team
to produce content
for UN Women websites
and social media channels - Attend all staff meetings and retreats in
Kampala and provide support to the Advocacy and Communication Specialist
as requested.
Partnerships and Coordination:
- Handle queries of press, invited guests
and interested individuals during pre-during-and post events. - Work closely with the UN Women Partners
and document key activities supported by the Country Office. - Attend UNCG meetings and participate in
UNCG joint activities - Other related duties as required.
Communications and Advocacy - Preparing conference/event information folders, including the
agenda, printing of presentations and other documents and ensure all are
ready in advance of the event - Ensure UN Women branding guidelines are
adhered to by staff and partners. - Assist programme staff to develop
communication and advocacy materials. - Work closely with communications
colleagues to promote the events, including sending out electronic announcements,
contributing to the development of banners, advertisements, etc. - Arrange displays and exhibitions of UN
Women work in Uganda - Liaise with Operations team and venue to
ensure all equipment are set up in advance (i.e. sound system, projector,
banners, etc.) and removed after the event. - Assist in development of knowledge
management products.
Media Relations:
- Establish a contact list of media
personnel specializing on gender and women empowerment - Support the preparations of press releases
and media advisories - Assist in organization of press
conferences and briefings - Preparation of press kits and other
information for publicity in the media.
Other UN Volunteer Duties:
- Strengthen their knowledge and
understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and
external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance
in events that mark IVD) - Be acquainted with and build on
traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country; - Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary
action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing
reflection activities; - Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV
publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.: - Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for
newly-arrived UN Volunteers; - Promote or advise local groups in the use
of online volunteering, or encourage
relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online
Volunteering service whenever technically possible.
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience:

- The ideal applicant for the United Nations
UN WOMEN Communications Officer job opportunity must hold a Bachelor’s
degree in Mass Communications/ journalism - A minimum of two years of relevant work
experience in the medial communications - Computer literacy skills with proficiency
in office software packages (MS word, excel etc.) and knowledge of desktop
publishing packages, - Previous experience in producing print
communication materials. - Prior experience in media/public relations
- Experience in handling social media
communications. - Proficiency in English both written and
verbal - Knowledge of the local Uganda languages is
an asset. - Personal Competencies: Communication,
Creativity, Integrity, Ethics and Value, Respect for diversity, Working in
team
