Aid Operations (ECHO), formerly known as the European Community Humanitarian
Aid Office, is the European Commission’s department for overseas humanitarian
aid and for civil protection. The European Union has been the second largest
donor of humanitarian assistance since 2000. For humanitarian aid, the
Commission works with about 200 operational partners, including United Nations
agencies, the Red Cross/ Crescent movement and non-governmental organizations
(NGOs). Humanitarian Aid is channeled impartially, straight to victims,
regardless of their race, ethnic group, religion, gender, age, nationality or
political affiliation.
Responsibilities:
- Provide reliable driving services using
the vehicles, for the transport of authorized ECHO staff members,
officials and visitors in accordance with the authorized routing following
ECHO safety and security rules and regulations; - Take care of the day-to-day efficient
maintenance of the vehicles; ensure that the vehicle is kept clean at all
times; - The Driver will perform minor preventive
repairs and make necessary arrangements for repairs and service and ensure
that the vehicles are kept in good running condition at all times; - Log official trips, daily mileage, fuel
consumption reports, and servicing done; - The jobholder will also collect and
deliver mail, documents and other items and paying of office bills as
required; - Meet official personnel and visitors at
the airport and transport them; - Take the necessary steps required in
accordance with the rules and regulations in case of an accident; - The incumbent will negotiate, liaise and coordinate with
local authorities to facilitate vehicle movements in designated areas; - Provide translation of basic information
into English for the ECHO staff in the vehicle.
Experience:
- The ideal applicant for the ECHO Driver
job opportunity should have completed Primary School Education
(Certificate of Primary Education); - Completion of Defensive driving training;
- Broad knowledge in Motor Mechanics;
- The applicant must be in possession of a
valid Driving License class /Truck Driving License with excellent
knowledge of driving rules and regulations; - A minimum of three years’ experience as a
driver with a safe driving record. - Previous exposure and experience in using
HF/VHF radios. Work experience in an international environment will be an
added advantage; - Computer literacy i.e. proficiency in MS.
Word and Excel will be an added advantage; - Previous experience in driving and
maintaining different makes/ models of diesel and petrol, saloon and
4-wheel drive vehicles will have an added advantage; - The applicant must be trustworthy, have a
high sense of responsibility, be alert, physically fit and emotionally
stable; - Should be polite and willing to take and
carry out instructions. Must be tactful, punctual and able to use common
sense; - Ability to work independently and exercise
good judgment in difficult situations. Ability to use discretion and
initiative; - Ability to work effectively with people of
different cultural backgrounds within and outside ECHO; - Good spoken English and Luganda language;
- Ability and flexibility to be able to
travel throughout the region.
