Save the Children delivers programs in over 36 districts in the North,
Rwenzori, North-Eastern and Central regions of Uganda, Currently, Save the
Children has a staff complement of over 200 persons. We save children’s lives.
We fight for their rights. We help them fulfil their potential. In 2014, we
reached over 143 million children through our work around 52m directly and 91
million indirectly around the world.
Advocacy and Communications will be responsible for the development and
implementation of Save the Children’s overall Advocacy Strategy and
Communications Plan, in promotion of children’s rights and driven by child
participation. Based on Save the Children’s programming priorities, he/she will
support the identification of key issues for advocacy and communications,
preparing and implementing strategies and messages. The incumbent will ensure
adequate documentation of evidence and good practices. He/she will lead the
Communications team in gathering and developing effective audio/visual and
written material that voices the gaps in fulfilment of children’s rights,
effectively explain Save the Children’s interventions and engage external
stakeholders and donors in our work. She/he will succeed in establishing strong
and strategic partnerships with like-minded organisations in advancing the
rights of children. The HAC will oversee traditional media and related external
communications activities and lead in developing effective online social media
strategies to engage the wider public. In addition, the HAC will build the
capacity of Technical Specialists and Regional Area Managers in undertaking
advocacy activities in line with Save the Children’s Advocacy Strategy.
Experience:
- The ideal candidate for the Save the
Children International Head of Advocacy and Communications job placement
should preferably hold a Bachelor’s Degree or higher in social science,
human rights, development, international relations, journalism/mass
communication. - Possession of a post graduate degree in
communications and media will be an added advantage. - A minimum of six years’ experience in
undertaking major advocacy, media and communication initiatives in humanitarian
and development contexts. - Proven experience in analysing the
situation of children using the child rights programming/ principles
framework. - Excellent track record of policy
influencing with partners, government and civil societies/key stakeholders - Proven ability to think strategically, to
analyze complex information and offer creative, practical and effective
solutions - Excellent influencing skills, including an
ability to deal with people at all levels with credibility, tact, and
diplomacy - Excellent written and verbal
communications skills, and an ability to produce good quality documents,
information for a variety of audiences and communicate good practices - Previous exposure and experience in policy
and practice analysis and implementing strategic advocacy initiatives
aimed at bringing changes in these areas - Excellent interpersonal skills such as
networking, negotiation and communication. - Willingness and ability to travel time to
upcountry locations to support field teams as security permits - Good computer skills to produce advocacy
documents and document and communicate good practices. - High level of fluency in English, both
verbal and written, required. - Past exposure and experience of working
with local partners and District Local Government in Child Rights
Governance, Health, Nutrition, Education, HIV/AIDS or Child Protection is
an added advantage. - Excellent analytical skills and strategic
planning abilities. - Ability to establish and maintain
conducive collegial relations and perform effectively as a member of a
team. - Computer literacy and excellent
documentation skills are a must. - Willingness to travel and work in
hard-to-reach areas, occasionally under strenuous conditions. - Availability and willingness to work extra
hours during times of humanitarian responses. - Highly developed cultural awareness and
ability to work well in an international environment with people from
diverse backgrounds and cultures. - Ability to intervene with crisis
management or troubleshooting as necessary. - Exceptional interpersonal and
communication skills including influencing, negotiation and coaching. - Excellent time management and planning
capacity. - Availability and willingness to work extra
hours during times of humanitarian responses.
