between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and five regional States
(Angola, Namibia, Rwanda, Uganda and Zimbabwe) in July 1999, the Security
Council established the United Nations Organization Mission in the Democratic Republic
of the Congo (MONUC) by its resolution 1279 of 30 November 1999, initially to
plan for the observation of the ceasefire and disengagement of forces and
maintain liaison with all parties to the Ceasefire Agreement. Later in a series
of resolutions, the Council expanded the mandate of MONUC to the supervision of
the implementation of the Ceasefire Agreement and assigned multiple related
additional tasks.
Within delegated authority, the Heavy Vehicle Operator will carry out the
following duties:
- Delivers
goods via a heavy truck - Loads
and unloads cargo - Collect
delivery instructions from appropriate sources. - Secures
cargo for transport using ropes, blocks, chains, binders or covers, - Maintains
logs of working hours or of vehicle services or repairs status,
following applicable regulations. - Follows
all applicable safety procedures for transporting dangerous goods. - Takes
appropriate drivers rest periods during trips. - Follows
all appropriate traffic laws. - Drives
trucks to weigh stations before and after loading and long routes
to document weights and to comply with all regulations. - Maneuvers
trucks into loading or unloading positions, following signals from loading
crew and checking that vehicles and loading equipment are properly
positioned - Follows
accident procedures if an accident occurs. - Keeps
truck and associated equipment, clean and in good working order. - Performs
basic vehicle maintenance checks and services, such as adding oil, fuel,
or radiator fluid or performing minor repairs. - Checks
conditions of trailers after contents have been unloaded to ensure that
there has been no damage. - Cranks
trailer landing gear up or down to safety secure vehicles. - Loads
and unloads to inspect loads, ensuring that cargo is secure. - Remove
debris from loaded trailers. - Perform
emergency roadside repairs, such as changing tires or installing light
bulbs, tire chains or spark plugs. - Collaborates
with other operators as part of a driving team on some trips. - Perform
other tasks as assigned.
Experience:
- The ideal candidate for the United Nations
Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
(MONUSCO Heavy Vehicle Operator job should hold a High school diploma or equivalent is required. - Technical
training as Motor Vehicle Technician (National Technician Certificate or
equivalent) is highly desirable - At least two years of progressively responsible experience in truck
driving or bus driving experience is required. - Hold a valid national driving license including class B, C, D and E (heavy
trucks and buses) is required - Languages: fluency in oral and written English
is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is
an advantage.
