NatureUganda is the operational name of the Eastern Africa Natural
History Society, the oldest conservation NGO in East Africa. It was set up in
1909 as a scientific organization with the aim of documenting the diversity of
wildlife in East Africa. The mission of Nature Uganda is to promote the understanding,
appreciation and conservation of nature in Uganda. In pursuing this mission,
NatureUganda strives to: enhance knowledge of Uganda’s biodiversity and
critical habitats, create nature friendly public, advocate for policies
favourable to the environment, take action to conserve priority species, sites
and habitats. This aim encompasses conservation, awareness rising and advocacy.
Nature Uganda is a membership organization and has a dynamic programme of
events as a means of servicing the membership and promoting appreciation of
nature in Uganda and beyond.
Job Summary: The Programme
Officer will support the “People Partner with Nature for Sustainable Living
Program (PPN)” with the overall goal of ‘reducing the destruction of forested
IBAs and contribute to the realization of best participatory forest management
practices for the benefit of air. The project will be implemented through
partnerships with responsible national government agencies, District local
governments and Non-Governmental organizations operating in the areas within
the Echuya and Kasyoha Kitomi landscapes. The incumbent will be responsible for
ensuring close linkage and working relationship with partners and the effective
implementation of the PPN programme at field level.
Key Duties and
Responsibilities:  
  • The jobholder will coordinate community
    development, business and enterprise promotion and community networking
    programs at programme sites.
  • Responsible for initiating strategic
    community programs that are in line with Nature Uganda work areas and
    programme requirements.
  • Organize, guide and direct day to day
    project activities in accordance with the approved project documents and
    work plans.
  • Prepare annual and quarterly reports and
    budgets for implementation of activities and ensure proper implementation
    of approved activities.
  • Prepare and submit routine and timely
    technical reports and financial reports regarding programme progress.
  • Actively promote partnerships especially
    district local governments in programme areas and other key partners
    involved in the programme to ensure that they deliver on their tasks.
  • Represent the programme and/or Nature
    Uganda as necessary and at appropriate formal meetings/functions/occasions
    on matters related to the programme.
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience: 
  • The ideal candidate should preferably hold
    a University degree in disciplines covering Forestry, Conservation
    Biology, Environmental Management, Tourism, Wildlife Management, or
    related Natural Sciences and community development
  • A minimum of five years of relevant
    working experience in areas such as community development, forest
    management, restoration and domestication of forest products, CFM process
    and guidelines.
  • Working knowledge of developing detailed
    work plans and budgets.
  • Previous exposure and experience of
    working with local government bureaucracies, Civil Society Organizations,
    youth and women community groups.
  • Community development skills, business
    development skills, networking skills are important to successful delivery
    of the tasks.
  • Working knowledge of strategic planning
    processes, proposal development, project reporting and donor relations.
  • Fluency in oral and written English and
    good facilitator of meetings (knowledge of any of the local languages in
    the project areas will help in communication but not a must).
