The Medical Research Council/ Uganda Virus Research Institute
(MRC/UVRI) based at the Uganda Virus Research Institute in Entebbe is a
bilateral multi-disciplinary research organization funded by, the Medical
Research Council (UK) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in
Uganda under the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and
other donor agencies. Established in 1988, the MRC/UVRI Uganda Research Unit on
AIDS is an internationally recognized center of excellence for research on HIV
infection and related diseases, contributing knowledge on the revolving
epidemic, the evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and
prevention, and the development of health policy and practice in Africa and
worldwide.
Job Summary: The Senior
Grants Officer takes lead in the overall management of the research support
office, ensuring timely processing of grant applications, follows up status of
pipeline/submitted proposals, liaises with Contracts team to provide
information required to finalise contract signing processes; follow up initial
setup and subsequent execution of project activities, reporting and auditing
working closely with the principle investigators thematic and programme/section
leaders at MRC/UVRI.
Key Duties and
Responsibilities:  
  • Responsible
    for sourcing funding opportunities for principle investigators
  • In
    charge of networking with potential funders/ collaborators and
    promoting Unit Offering.
  • Responsible
    for writing basic grant abstracts and outline proposals.
  • Assisting
    with and completing pre award and grant proposals.
  • Work
    closely with the finance section to ensure sufficient overheads and direct
    costs are included in the proposal
  • Chasing
    grant applications and documentation.
  • Responsible
    for checking funder/donor terms and conditions to ensure they align with
    MRCs policies
  • Submitting
    grant applications and also acting as a point of contact for any
    follow up queries
  • Ensuring
    the stakeholders are kept appraised during the grant application process
  • Responsible
    for maintaining an accurate and up to date MRC contracts database
    (COVERIS 5).
  • Upon
    Award, review grant agreement liaising with UK contracts team to obtain
    approval signatures.
  • Responsible
    for monitoring success rates per programme / Theme and funder.
  • Take
    lead in the review and development of MRC policies and procedures
    for governance, cost and risk implications to provide the best possible
    support to internal and external investigators to ensure continued quality
    improvement.
  • Responsible
    for the direct supervision and performance management for the grants Officers.
  • Providing
    regular management information
  • Develop
    strong working relationships with principle stakeholders and support staff
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience: 
  • The
    applicant for the Senior Grants Officer job opportunity should
    hold a Bachelor’s Degree with a
    concentration in accounting or finance and previous experience in
    grants financial management, accounting, and/or auditing.
  • Possession
    of a Master’s degree in a related field will be an added advantage.
  • Professional
    certification in PRINCE2, PMI or other relevant Project management course.
  • A
    minimum of two (02) years’ experience in busy grants office with
    direct supervision of personnel.
  • Previous
    experience in a Medical/Humanitarian or international organization
  • Proficient
    in the use of financial management software; good knowledge and experience
    with spreadsheets and databases.
  • Ability
    to interpret complex grant funding requirements, submissions, and budget
    projections; ability to
    interpret federal, state, and local government laws and regulations
  • Regarding
    grant administration; ability to review the work of others to
    ensure conformance to standards; ability to communicate effectively across
    a broad spectrum of staff, both orally and in writing.
