Job Summary: The Nutrition
Officer will support improvement of the overall Nutrition component under the
USAID/Uganda Social Marketing Activity project currently being implemented by
the franchised private health facilities in 63 districts. The position entails
direct support to the regional based teams in the implementation of the malaria
and nutritional components both at the facility and in the communities. Other key
functions include representation of UHMG in key stakeholder’s meetings at MOH,
and district levels, strengthen the skills of the service providers, ensure
quality implementation of malaria and nutrition services and document best
practices.
Key Duties and
Responsibilities:  
  • Provide an oversight role of the
    implementation of the Nutrition programme in consultation with the
    managers of Maternal Child Health manager, ASR manager, and the Health
    systems manager.
  • Work in liaison with the Clinical and
    Quality Assurance Officers (CQAOs) in the establishment of the integrated
    model to strengthen Nutrition services in the private clinics and at the
    community level.
  • Build the capacity of the service
    providers in the private clinics in the management of malnutrition cases.
  • Work with Ministry of Health departments
    of Nutrition in developing SOPs to guide the implementation of malaria and
    Nutrition services in the private facilities and drug shops.
  • Build the capacity of the service
    providers in the management of child hood illnesses using the IMCI model
    of assessment and treatment.
  • Work closely with the regional teams and
    district health team in strengthening the capacity of the VHTs/Good Life
    Promoters in the active case identification and referral through routine
    screening of children under 5s.
  • Integrate Nutrition activities in the
    programing of MCH service in the facility and the outreaches.
  • Liaise with stakeholders in the Nutrition
    Technical Working groups and other implementing partners in Nutrition and
    build new synergies in the programing.
  • Support programmatic reviews to assess
    progress, share successful evidence based intervention, and recommend
    strategies in line with UHMG strategic plan.
  • Ensure private facilities have the
    required tools and equipment and Good Life Promoters (GLPs) are equipped
    with necessary Outpatient therapeutic center (OTC) and Supplementary
    Feeding Program (SFP).
  • Ensure that GLPs are supported to carry
    out awareness messages on Nutrition during the Implementing partner’s
    session.
  • Work in liaison with the regional CQAOs to
    review facility based performance in Malaria and Nutrition activities.
  • Provide regular on job mentorship of
    health workers on Nutrition interventions.
  • Provide support to franchise clinics in
    the implementation of quality improvement projects in malaria and
    nutrition
  • Offer technical support in the development
    and dissemination of IEC material related to Malaria case management and
    the management of Acute and severe malnutrition.
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience:
  • The ideal candidate for the UHMG Nutrition
    Officer job placement should hold a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine, Public
    health, Health Services, Nursing, Nutrition or equivalent qualification.
  • Specific training in the prevention and
    treatment of malnutrition and in malaria case management.
  • Five or more years’ experience of managing
    malaria and nutrition projects in an NGO.
  • Familiarity with the CMAM model of
    management of malnutrition especially in the private sector.
  • Previous exposure and experience working
    with a social marketing organization and with experience implementing the
    Total market approach.
  • Prior experience in behavior change
    communication approaches.
  • Ability to conceptualize issues and
    document findings.
  • Strong staff management, capacity building
    and supervision skills.
