worldwide hunger and for sustainable food and nutrition security by promoting
site-appropriate farming, establishing access to clean water, sanitation and
hygiene, improving healthcare and education for people living in rural areas as
well as promoting skills development for youth.
About ECHO Project:
Welthungerhilfe received a grant from ECHO – European Commission for
Humanitarian Aid to implement a one year project entitled “Wash Response to
South Sudan Refugees In Bidibidi Settlement, Yumbe District.’’
Job Summary: The WASH
Engineer will be tasked with reducing the health risks to people affected by
the emergency / disaster conditions by providing or rehabilitating water and
sanitation systems and promoting good hygiene practices. The incumbent will
prepare technical drawings, BoQ specifications for water supply schemes in
refugee settlements and sanitation infrastructure
Key Duties and
Responsibilities:  
  • Assess health risks, water and sanitation
    needs, available resources and the capacity of the existing systems for
    the settlement
  • Identify suitable water sources, confirm
    quality and quantity of water available and obtain relevant government
    approvals
  • The incumbent will consult with relevant
    stakeholders (community representatives) about access, design and
    management of water systems and sanitation facilities as well as hygiene
    promotion needs.
  • Design and implement water storage,
    treatment and distribution systems- potable/ other uses
  • Design and implement sanitation systems
    for household and communal latrines, household liquid and solid wastes, hospital
    waste and other community facilities, including drainage and vector
    control and in dose coordination with health and education services.
  • Develop hygiene promotion / education
    materials for staff training and public information
  • Deliver training on water treatment, water
    quality testing, and maintenance and hygiene promotion to technical staff,
    water monitors, truck drivers, cleaners, community volunteers and
    community facilitators.
  • The incumbent will assess conditions and
    set up maintenance systems, train staff and arrange repairs of tanks,
    pumps, generators, pipe networks, drainage systems and water quality
    testing equipment.
  • Prepare technical drawings, BoQ
    specifications for water supply schemes in refugee settlements and
    sanitation infrastructure
  • Develop, negotiate and manage contracts
    with service providers (including preparation of tender documentations and
    evaluating capacity and quality of the contractors)
  • Supervise contractors and direct labour
    work teams
  • Work closely with other agencies /
    government bodies / donors to ensure coordination and works
    suitability. 
  • Actively participate in WASH coordination
    meetings
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the
    supervisor
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience: 
  • The ideal candidate for the Welthungerhilfe
    (WHH) WASH Engineer career opportunity should preferably hold a University
    Degree in Engineering or other relevant field(s) 
  • A minimum of five years of hands – on
    experience in water treatment and supply scheme, sanitation, public
    health, geophysics 
  • One year of experience in similar field in
    an emergency response
  • Excellent command of English and knowledge
    of local language (Arabic, Kakawa, Lugbara) is desirable
  • Ability to work in difficult conditions,
    independently and in a team.
  • Strong cross cultural communication and
    resilience skills  4
  • Previous exposure an experience in
    supervising and mentoring of other staffs
  • Ability to establish and maintain
    effective working relations with people of different cultural backgrounds.
  • Hold a clean and valid riding permit
