About Global Pulse: 
Global Pulse is an innovation initiative of the United Nations
Secretary-General on Big Data. Its vision is a future in which big data is
harnessed safely and responsibly as a public good. Its mission is to accelerate
discovery, development and scaled adoption of big data innovation for
sustainable development and humanitarian action. Global Pulse is building a
catalytic network of in-country innovation centers, which will test new tools,
data and analysis, share what lessons with the global community, mainstream
successful approaches for real-time impact monitoring into policymaking. The
first Lab has been established in New York (Pulse Lab New York) followed by
Jakarta, Indonesia and Kampala, Uganda. Pulse Lab Kampala is an inter-agency
initiative of the United Nations under the leadership of the UN Resident
Coordinator in Uganda. The first of its kind in Africa, it brings together
researchers from Government, the UN, non-governmental organizations and private
sector to explore the utility of new sources of digital “Big Data” (such as
social media, mobile data, online information) and real-time analysis
techniques for sustainable development and humanitarian assistance.
Job Summary: The Junior Data
Analytics Assistant will work to assist with data analysis and development of
data visualizations from Digital Data (including Big Data) sources (such as
online media, social networks, imagery, geospatial data, population mobility,
transaction records, public radio content, etc…).
Key Duties and Responsibilities:  
  • Render support in reviewing and vetting
    various data sets and real-time information resources that could be
    relevant to ongoing or potential Big Data for Development research
    projects.
  • Offer support in data cleaning process for
    different data sets.
  • Assist in exploring social media platforms
    to gain insights for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Assist in establishing data processing
    pipelines for different data sources.
  • Assist to create maps, statistical
    representations, plots, information graphics, tables, and charts to
    present data analysis.
  • Assist to produce graphical elements for
    data representations.
  • Monitor events that would contribute to
    PLJ research activities such as existing data, new types of data sources,
    and big data technologies.
  • Qualitatively, assist on conducting desk
    research to identify options for implementation of pilot projects for the
    Lab with partners.
  • Assist in the preparation of materials in
    support of Pulse Lab Kampala’s Research and assisting in the revision and
    delivering them based on relevant comments and feedback.
  • Assist to produce outreach materials and
    support dissemination of research findings in support of UN Global Pulse,
    Pulse Lab Kampala as well as external collaborators.
  • Support preparing materials for capacity
    building and knowledge dissemination by the Lab with partners.
  • Participates in brainstorming sessions in
    the Lab to define activities under Track 1 and track 2.
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience:
  • The ideal applicant for the United Nations
    UNDP Junior Data Analytics Assistant job placement should hold a BSc in
    Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical
    Engineering or related field. 
    Qualifying years of experience are calculated following the receipt
    of the first level university degree recognized by the United Nations.
  • Programming skills especially in Python
    programming language, experience in using IPython will be an added
    advantage,
  • Experience in using Version Control System
    especially Github.
  • Experience in analysing social media data
    for example from Facebook or Twitter
  • Experience in data analytics and data
    visualisation tasks using Pandas, matplotlib, Seaborn, NumPy, and SciPy.
  • Experience in visualizing data on maps in
    the web using tools like leaflets.
  • Experience in data exploration and data
    cleaning
  • Experience with data visualization.
