- Get instructions from your client about the
nature of the research to be carried out - Use an appropriate and creative methodology
to design and manage a research project which may involve the use of
quantitative and or qualitative methods and may include both pilot and
development work - Design questionnaires
- Apply a range of research techniques to
gather relevant information, including document analysis, surveys, case
studies and interviews (face to face, telephone and online) - Develop and test theories
- Prepare, present and disseminate results, for
example as a verbal presentation and in a written report - Work closely with and direct social research
field interviewers to gather information - Carry out information and data retrieval
searches using electronic databases - Keenly analyze and evaluate research and
interpret data making sure that the issues are identified - Gather information by directing or carrying
out field work - Offer research-based briefings and advise,
which may involve writing action plans - Guide external bodies on social policy.
- The applicants for the Social Research
Officer vacancy should hold a Degree in Social Sciences (Key subjects
-Business studies, Geography, Mathematics, Psychology, statistics, Social
Policy, Sociology or Politics) - Previous experience of participating in
research projects such as Crime,
education, gender, environment, health care, poverty, social services,
transport, unemployment and population structure and migration - Prior exposure and experience in managing a
research project and report writing - Previous experience in carrying out
qualitative and quantitative Research and developing quantitative
questionnaires and qualitative discussion guides - Use of electronic databases
- Knowledge of statistical techniques and
computer based programs - Knowledge of research methods/techniques
(Interviews, observation, focus groups, and survey questions) - Numeracy and confidence in using statistical
techniques and computer-based programs - Excellent analytical skills
- Excellent interpersonal, team working and
communication skills - Good report writing skills
- Project management skills
- Flexible approach to be able to work on
several different research projects at the same time - Organizational skills, including time
management and the ability to work under pressure and deadlines
