Law Society is a membership organization established by an Act of Parliament to
provide services to its members in particular and to the people of Uganda in
general. Its vision is to excel as a
professional body in the development of the legal profession and promotion of
justice in Uganda. Its mission is to improve the professional standards of
members of the legal profession and to promote human rights and the rule of
law, by assisting the government and the judiciary in the administration and
practice of law in Uganda. Uganda Law Society operates a Legal Aid Project.

- Keenly monitor and document legal reforms and
other developments affecting the rule of law and fundamental freedoms both
in the State and the region - Gather information and conduct research on
accountability and transparency in lawmaking;– assisting in the
preparation and conduct of ULS assessments of the legislative process - Regularly monitor and report on court
proceedings and the institutional functionality of the justice sector
–focusing on implementation of legal and structural reforms related to
independence and transparency of the judiciary, its ability to meet fair
trial standards, and the treatment of vulnerable victims and witnesses
within the system - Review court rulings and pick recommendations
for reform. - Keenly monitor the Parliamentary processes
and obtaining up to date information on the status of Bills - Offer support in the preparations for the ULS
Annual Rule of Law Week; - Draft spot reports when required and
performing other related duties as assigned. - Perform any other lawful duties as may be
assigned.
- The applicant for the Uganda Law Society Rule
of Law Officer should preferably hold a University degree in law - At least four years of professional work
experience in law and some years of international experience - Excellent knowledge of international human
rights law - Broad working knowledge of legislative
processes would be an asset - Political intuition and tact
- Organizational and strong analytical skills
- Resourcefulness, initiative and maturity of
judgment - Ability to work with minimum supervision
- Excellent working knowledge of English
(written and oral comprehension) with a particular knowledge of technical
legal terminology in use in the field of rule of law and human rights
(including strong drafting skills) is required - Ability and willingness to work as a member
of a team, with people of different cultural and religious backgrounds,
different gender, and diverse political views, while maintaining
impartiality and objectivity - Computer proficiency with good knowledge of
computer applications, especially website maintenance, html language, word
processing.
