The
Foundation for Human Rights Initiative (FHRI) is an independent,
non-governmental, non-partisan and not-for-profit human rights advocacy
organisation. FHRI seeks to remove impediments to democratic development and
meaningful enjoyment of the fundamental freedoms enshrined in the 1995 Uganda
Constitution and in regional and international human rights instruments through
enhancement of knowledge, respect and observance of human rights and the
promotion of exchange of information and best practices through training,
education, research, legislative advocacy and strategic partnerships in Uganda.
Job Summary: The Research and Advocacy Officer will be
responsible for leading advocacy efforts at the local, regional and
international levels at The Foundation for Human Rights Initiative (FHRI). The
Research and Advocacy Officer will be responsible for coordinating advocacy campaigns
and events, developing and strengthening advocacy tools and strategies and
supporting research activities in the Research and Advocacy Division. The
incumbent will work closely with the Senior Researcher to strengthen the impact
of the research findings in promoting human rights friendly policies and
practice change in Uganda.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The applicant should hold an advanced degree
    in human rights law, international law, political science, social sciences
    or other related field.
  • A minimum of five years’ work experience in
    research and advocacy in human rights or related field.
  • Previous work experience in conducting
    research and advocacy and a solid background in human rights programming
  • Prior exposure and experience in strategy
    development, policy and legislative analysis and use of research to engage
    and influence high-level decision makers.
  • Broad knowledge and understanding of
    imaginative communication techniques and an appreciation of how those
    tools could work with policy, research and advocacy to influence policy
    and practice change.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, analytical
    and fundraising skills.
  • IT proficiency, in particular MS Office,
    social media and management information systems.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure,
    manage competing priorities and meeting tight deadlines.
  • Fluency in English and at least one local
    language.
