Job Summary: The Trainee Coffee Merchant will work closely with
experienced general managers that will expose them to the full range of the coffee
origin business. The incumbent will develop essential business skills and
knowledge and establish strong relationships with existing customers and
industry contacts. The incumbent will also be expected to take on certain
aspects of management within the origin business, including managing staff. The
commercial experience will be developed by working hand in hand with the
general manager, supporting projects and commercial strategies that will
develop your knowledge of the fundamentals of buying and selling coffee at
origin, managing the risks involved to ultimately grow the business, and
increase long-term profitability and value to our shareholders. The Trainee will
be exposed to a wide variety of areas within coffee, helping to build your
understanding of the global coffee supply chain. This will include coffee
procurement, quality control, processing and shipping/export.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant should hold a minimum of a 2:1
(or equivalent) Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Mathematics, Economics,
Business Management or Finance preferred - At least three years’ work experience in
commercial, trading commodities or financial services organisation - Confident and articulate, able to communicate
ideas clearly to a diverse audience (written & verbal) - Commercially minded and able to identify business
improvements/opportunities - Career focused, committed and a self-starter
- Clear thinker and an effective planner who
can organise themselves and others - Strong performance bias; sets high personal
standards, goal orientated, ambitious and able to maintain performance
under pressure - Collaborative and inclusive style, actively
engages stakeholders, colleagues and peers - Determined, resilient and prepared to make a
long term commitment to ED & F Man’s business. - Skilled in building relationships across a
broad range of people and different situations - Ability to adapt to various different working
environments such as an office, factory and coffee plantation - Fluent written and spoken English (to
business standard) with at least one other language such as Kiswahili,
German, French, Spanish or Portuguese.
