established in 1988, and duly registered with the NGO Board and NGO Forum. IAU
is actively involved in programs geared towards the protection and improvement
of lives of disadvantaged people living in urban and rural areas in Uganda and
in the Great Lakes Region. InterAid Uganda is focused on its thematic areas of
Rights Protection, Education, Livelihood & Food Security, Health
(HIV&AIDS; Malaria; Maternal and Reproductive Health), Water, Sanitation
& Hygiene (WASH), Environment and Disaster Management and good Management
and Governance systems.
Job Summary: The Advocacy/Communications Officer will primarily
initiate, design, and plan strategies for promoting and enhancing the public
image and awareness of IAU services to the communities in line with the
Organization mission and objectives.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Develop and monitor the implementation of
    policies, strategies, and guidelines, for Public Relations, Advocacy and
    communications in line with the InterAid Uganda’s strategic plan.
  • The incumbent will develop and maintain good
    working relations with the media, including; local and national
    newspapers, magazines, social media platforms, radios, & TVs; then
    professionally engage them instantly to rectify issues that negatively
    impact on the organization’s image, while boosting its visibility
    periodically through targeted promotional messages in line with the
    InterAid Uganda’s Projects.
  • Work closely with OPM and UNCR Communication
    officers for joint advocacy interventions.
  • Provide support in all community related
    activities by creating awareness and support the mobilisation process and
    participation.
  • Works in liaison with sector heads to get and
    circulate relevant information to the PoC as and when required.
  • Responsible for managing all stakeholder
    information for the organisation for easy access and reference purposes
  • Responsible for all internal and external
    communications at all times.
  • Continuously conduct research on policy
    issues and new developments and advise management according on the new or
    any direction to take.
  • Develop and monitor the implementation of
    Public Relations, Advocacy and communications ‘operational strategy’ based
    on holistic strategic thinking and monitor its implementation through
    periodically developed quarterly consolidated data utilization & reporting
    by program implementers
  • Develop and monitor the implementation of a
    consolidated ‘Public Relations, Advocacy and communications’ plan and
    budget as well as monitor the integration of related activities during
    planning and budgeting for any InterAid Uganda project objective
  • Actively monitor the development and usage of
    organizational key information tools that promote both internal and
    external relations; then represent InterAid Uganda at local, regional so
    as to engage the public about InterAid Uganda’s mandate in line with the
    organization’s policies and guidelines.
  • Develop and monitor the implementation of a
    system to track local and international media reports concerning all
    projects implemented by interAid Uganda on refugees in Uganda
  • Actively monitor the organizations’ progress
    in terms of building and maintaining of strong alliances and networks with
    public and private partner organizations for concerted advocacy efforts
    and greater participation in policy dialogue, then report their impact on
    InterAid Uganda’s performance, image, and visibility.
  • Develop and monitor the implementation of
    strategies for website content management; writing/editing for the web;
    graphic design; and site management.
  • The incumbent will develop and monitor the
    implementation of advocacy strategies that promote a vibrant civil
    society; targeted community mobilization; and community engagement in advocacy
    and resource mobilization to enhance community ownership and
    sustainability.
  • The incumbent will monitor the implementation
    of guidelines for developing press briefs, and organizing press
    conferences and events that provide information to the general public and
    key stakeholders in line with the various grant objectives and
    departmental mandate
  • Document the best practices implemented,
    success stories and case studies of the community level changes for
    dissemination and learning
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The ideal candidate for the Advocacy/Communications
    Officer job placement should preferably hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass
    Communication from a recognized university or its equivalent.
  • Possession of a master’s degree in
    communication/ Journalism and or any other relevant field will be an added
    advantage
  • At minimum of five years’ experience in a
    similar role at a middle management level.
  • Prior corporate governance exposure.
  • Past exposure and experience in advocacy and
    communication work is desirable.
  • Working knowledge of stakeholder and
    corporate social responsibility engagement.
