Job
Summary:
The Executive Principal – International School will be responsible for
the academic provisions, internal organization, effective management and
functioning of the International Schools in Aga Khan Education Services,
Uganda. (AKES,U). The next 3 academic years (2015/16 to 2018/19) will see a
period of intense repositioning of the schools. The EP will play a key role in
driving the change process.
Key
Duties and Responsibilities: 
1. Leadership:
·        
Lead by example, provide inspiration and
motivation, and embody for the pupils, staff, and parents the reality of the
school’s shared vision;
·        
Provide educational vision and direction to secure
the highest level of achievement for each pupil;
·        
Sustain the growth of their spiritual, moral,
cultural, mental and physical development and prepare them for the
opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life;
·        
Build a conducive teaching and learning
environment which manifests the values and ethos of AKDN and best educational
practice;
·        
Provide instructional and management leadership
and educational direction for the primary and secondary schools;
·        
Drive the repositioning in keeping with the
overarching vision and strategic direction;
·        
Work closely with the Head of Education and
Operations (HoE&O), develop a three year school development plan and yearly
budgets;
·        
Drive the academic, sports and after school
activities curriculum in accordance with best 
educational practice and the strategic objectives for AKES,U.
2. Management and Administration:
·        
Ensure that the Nursery and Elementary schools
achieves academic standards to allow for a smooth transition into the Aga Khan
Elementary and High Schools;
·        
Conduct an effective monitoring, evaluating and
reviewing procedures to manage whole school improvement;
·        
Evaluate pupil achievement and teaching and
learning standards through appropriate formative and summative assessment;
·        
Set appropriate priorities for expenditure,
allocate funds and ensure effective administrative control;
·        
Manage, monitor and review the range, quality,
quantity and use of all resources in order to improve pupils’ achievements and
secure value for money.
3. Staff:
·        
Provide leadership and oversight of the
performance and professional development of the staff and learning outcomes of
the students at the Nursery, Elementary and High Schools;
·        
Select staff in collaboration with the HoE&O,
and ensure their effective deployment including their orientation, supervision,
mentoring and support;
·        
Actively participate in the review and development
of HR strategies polices and plans for the schools to ensure that quality staff
are attracted and retained by the school;
·        
Ensure all staff uphold standards of professional
and personal conduct at all times.
4. Community and Public Relations:
·        
Build positive relationships with the community,
including business and industry, to extend the curriculum and enhance learning
and teaching;
·        
Create and maintain a successful partnership with
parents and regularly seek stakeholder feedback and gauge the expectations of
parents;
·        
Maintain liaison with other schools, further
education and other agencies related to pupil welfare and achievement.
5. Curriculum and Student Welfare:
·        
Develop a roll-out plan to increase student
numbers in the Secondary School;
·        
Actively monitor and evaluate the quality of
teaching and the standards of pupils’ learning including those identified with
Special Educational Needs (in collaboration with the Head of Learning Support
Unit)  in order to set and meet
challenging targets for all students;
·        
Ensure that improvements in literacy, numeracy and
information and communication technology are priority targets for all pupils;
·        
Ensure that pupils develop strong study skills in
order to learn more effectively and with increasing independence;
·        
Ensure that the Student Handbook is kept up to
date and that the students, teachers and parents are familiar with its content.
Qualifications,
Skills and Experience:          
·        
The applicant should preferably hold a Bachelor’s
Degree in Education, or other relevant degree +PGCE. Possession of a Post
graduate education is an added advantage;
·        
A minimum of seven to ten years’ experience as
Deputy Head and/or Head Teacher in an international school;
·        
Excellent written and spoken English language;
·        
Previous exposure and experience leading KS3,
IGCSE and IB curricula;
·        
Working experience in the East African education
environment or other similar African context will be highly desirable;
·        
Broad understanding of, and experience in,
curriculum management, design, implementation and evaluation;
·        
Familiarity with all frameworks for school
improvement planning and evaluation;
·        
Excellent inter-personal skills  and the ability to work in partnership with
school staff, students, parents and other stakeholders;
·        
Ability to build a positive leadership style to
enable staff development through coaching and support;
·        
Good administrative, management and organizational
skills;
·        
Cultural awareness, understanding and sensitivity
to manage the challenges and opportunities of the local context.
