Association of Women’s Organisations in Uganda (NAWOU) is an umbrella
organisation whose members are NGOs, faith based organisations, CBOs and
professional women’s organisations. It aims at promoting and strengthening the
woman’s movement. This is done through undertaking mobilization of members for
networking, generating packages or repackages and disseminating of information
pertinent to members. We build the capacity of members for advocacy,
representation and direct support to members.
Empowerment Project seeks to promote women’s access to gainful employment
promoting what they do on a day to day basis. For example, women are largely
employed in the agricultural sector, and yet do not receive economic gains from
their labour and hardly is their contribution considered in the calculation of
the national gross domestic product. Through the project, capacities of member
organisations will be built to promote agribusiness, crafts and other
enterprises for women’s individual and collective gains. The project will also
promote innovative approaches and partnerships, increased dialogue among development
actors to strengthen development of sound public policies and commitment to
gender. The project mainstreams environmental sustainability in its
interventions.
Officer Economic Empowerment will be responsible for planning and
implementation of economic enterprises project interventions and providing
enterprise and marketing expertise and support to the project beneficiaries
related to the women economic and social empowerment and implementation of
enterprise project activities in respective Districts in Uganda. The main roles
are to train, guide and support women groups to diversify income sources.
Project/ Programme Planning and Management:
Actively participates in development of annual and
quarterly work plans of project enterprise activities
Supports women groups to develop weekly and monthly
work plans in enterprise component and budget planning with support and guidance
from the Programme Manager
Ensures that the implemented enterprise activities
are technically sound, cost effective and relevant to the target beneficiaries
needs
Guides on the creation of savings and
entrepreneurial culture among the rural and urban women for increased income at
household and at community level
Actively promotes of expansion of group savings and
loan methodology to the Saving groups
Ensures training of potential micro entrepreneur
groups to initiate income generating activities
Conducts trainings on value chain analysis, market
assessment, enterprise development, business management skills, feasibility
study etc. for project participants
Provide continuous support, encouragement and
technical advice to individual project participants, interest groups, saving
groups and cooperatives
Works with the communities to identify and establish
markets for micro and small scale enterprise products
Organizes exchange visits of entrepreneurs and
saving group members and establish linkages with MFIs, market players,
suppliers and service providers
Supports the team in development of technical
training material and training plan
The incumbent keeps the Programme Manager and the
Executive Director informed of any significant changes / opportunities in the
local environment, challenges and quality of the work.
Provides input in preparing monthly, quarterly and
annual reports
Organizes exhibitions of the produced products at
the district, provincial and national level
Leadership and Supervision:
Manages and supervise Consultants and other external
support that may be assigned to project/ programme responses
Offers support supervision and mentoring to
volunteers, interns and any other junior staff as assigned by line manager from
time to time
Advocacy and Networking:
Significantly contributes to advocacy on gender equality
and the rights of women to feed into the overall advocacy strategic direction
Develops and maintain communication with member
organizations and strategic networks and partnerships with actors relevant to
projects/ programmes under implementation;
Maintain documents about good practices, lessons and
learning’s including case studies for advocacy and organisational visibility.
Participates in partnership, networking and
cooperation meetings with government, donors, the CSO fraternity and other
related actors, prepare notes and undertake follow-up actions related to
project/ programme implementation.
Monitoring and Evaluation:
Actively monitors timely and quality implementation
of projects and programmes and provide reports to line Manager in line with
project documents, set targets and standards.
Carries out joint monitoring of the project with the
representatives of different stakeholders
Monitors all production support activities and make
recommendations for modification, improvement or the introduction of new
activities;
Supports the relevant staff to document and share
case studies, success stories and field visit reports as and when required
Provides documentation of field experiences
including credible data on gender equality and the rights of women for
synthesis and overall evaluations and planning of the Secretariat
Oversees the process of carrying out project
assessments and baselines, periodic monitoring and evaluations.
Evaluates and analyzes financial and supply reports
to ensure that expenditures are within project/ programme commitments and set
standards
Resource Mobilization:
Leads in identification and documenting of community
and membership needs, fundable ideas
Initiates and contributes to development of funding
proposals for resource mobilization.
Conduct a needs assessment to help identify key
economic activities relevant to different women groups.
Plan enterprise related project activities in
respective district, ensure a smooth implementation according to needs.
Offer technical support and guidance to project
participants to ensure implementation according to technical standards, and
market demands both local and international.
Experience:
The applicant should hold a Bachelor’s Degree in
economics, business administration, agriculture, business management and
marketing , agricultural economics, social sciences or related field with two
years of experience in similar capacity (Postgraduate training in relevant fields
will be of added advantage)
Proven experience, skills and knowledge in business
development and management, commercial horticulture and livestock production,
management and marketing and small enterprise development
Proven ability to think strategically, effectively
plan, setting priorities and meeting tight deadlines; results-oriented approach
to delivering work priorities
Excellent inter-personal skills in working with a
multi-disciplinary team
Competent to take initiatives, work with significant
level of autonomy and able to meet tight deadlines
Responsible, flexible, adaptable, ability to
multitask
Committed and honest in his/her work
