Duty Station: Moroto, Uganda
international NGO that is currently implementing the USAID-funded PL 480 Title
II Development Food Assistance Program entitled “Resiliency through Wealth,
Agriculture, and Nutrition in Karamoja (RWANU).” The RWANU Program aims to
reduce food insecurity among vulnerable rural populations in selected
sub-counties of Amudat, Moroto, Napak and Nakapiripirit. The Program’s
strategic objectives are (1) improved availability and access to food and (2)
reduced malnutrition in pregnant and lactating mothers and children under five.
The RWANU Program takes a preventive approach to reducing malnutrition,
focusing on the first 1,000 days of life when conditional food rations will
have the highest impact. RWANU promotes diversified livelihoods strategies
including linkages to market opportunities to ensure long-term food security
and resilience to food insecurity shocks.
implement Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Natural Resource Management (NRM)
conservation aspects of the program, leading to improved DRR and NRM
Technically support and facilitate DRR/NRM rapid
assessment and/ or map/identify existing community groups, opportunities,
challenges and suggestions for improvement both at district and community
level.
Sustain the already established NRM sites and
promote them as training grounds for community members
The incumbent will also integrate alternative
activities into the NRM sites to promote best practices in semi-arid regions.
He / she will also support the development and /or
strengthening of village disaster plans and community action planning on
DRR/NRM.
Facilitate community engagement on DRR/NRM
coordination including technical participation of both men and women,
clarifying land and resource rights and inclusion of climate change adaptation
and mitigation.
Work to integrate risk reduction identification and
early warning mechanism in program activities.
Build the capacity of staff on integration of
DRR/NRM into program implementation.
Identify best practices and share these as lessons
learnt directly with program beneficiaries.
Take part in in stakeholder coordination meetings
within the region.
Experience:
The applicant should preferably hold a Bachelor’s
degree in Environmental Sciences, Agriculture, Climatology, Disaster
Preparedness or similar subject.
At least three years’ experience in developing
strategies to reduce disaster risk and promote natural resource management.
Familiarity with USAID, or similar donor,
Excellent computer skills, MS Word, Excel and
PowerPoint essential.
Ability to work independently to achieve performance
objectives and deliverables required and willingness to travel within Karamoja
Ability to communicate in Ngakaramajong.
