faith- based local Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) offering Comprehensive
HIV Care & treatment, Training, Research & General Medical Services;
also providing Health Systems Strengthening to scale up comprehensive HIV/AIDS
Services in 16 districts of Central Uganda.
Job Summary:  The Anaesthetic Officer will be responsible
for providing professional anaesthetic services in an effective and efficient
manner to ensure client safety before, during and after surgical operations
done at Mildmay.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
1. Patient Care:  Provide anaesthetic services and participate in clinical management of
surgical conditions in
children, adolescents and adults under care at MUg to ensure good surgical outcomes
  • Work
    closely with the ward management teams in pre and post-operative patient
    care
  • Proficiently
    perform pre-anaesthetic assessment for all surgical patients ensuring that
    patients’ clinical notes, lab work and consent are in place prior to
    surgery.
  • Identify
    any pre-existing medical condition(s) and bring it to the attention of the
    surgical team for proper management.
  • Prepare,
    set-up, maintain and check the functionality of anaesthetic equipment to ensure
    safety of the patient during and after operations
  • Administer
    anaesthesia according to national guidelines to ensure high standard of patient
    care.
  • Conduct
    post-operative follow-up of patients in recovery rooms and on the ward by monitoring
    appropriate physiological and biochemical indicators to ensure good recovery.
  • Actively
    participate in the management of disaster situations and provide
    resuscitation to critically ill patients
  • In
    charge of the requisition and account for anaesthetic materials and
    sundries in a timely manner to ensure smooth running of anaesthetic
    services.
  • Recognise
    and diligently treat anaesthetic complications both immediate and long term
    to ensure client safety and proper recovery
  • Make
    accurate and complete anaesthetic records and update registers ensuring
    timely data entry
  • Ensure
    patients’ comfort and privacy during surgical procedures
  • Maintain
    confidentiality of all patients’ information and records
  • Ensure
    that all activities are done with an excellent customer care approach. Patient
    /Family focused care is core to MUg service delivery.
  • Practice
    all the minimum core standards of ‘service-quality steps’ as defined by
    Mildmay, ensuring that the quality steps are known to you and enforced to
    offer an excellent patient experience whilst a person is in your care
  • Make
    sure there are efficient processes in the delivery of all hospital anaesthetic
    services with a focus on timeliness, respect, kindness and open
    communication in responding to the needs of all patients and their
    attendants while accessing MUg surgical services
  • At
    all times consult with supervisors on procedures, practice ethically to
    avoid all negligent practice that may lead to liability to Mildmay or you
    professionally.
  • Participate
    in patient feedback assessments with in the surgical departments, as per
    SOP to ensure that the patient is satisfied in manner that is cordial,
    ethical and maintains the patient’s confidentiality; constructively use
    patient feedback to improve your practice
  • Actively
    manage patients’ complaints whilst promoting a patient-focused approach and
    liaise with the lead doctor for assistance
2. Departmental/Team Working/
Quality Assurance:
Actively
participate and support the functionality of surgical teams to proficiently deliver
an excellent surgical service for Mug clients to improve their health outcomes
  • Ensure
    adherence to Mildmay Uganda organisational core values for promotion of professional
    , ethical and accountability in work conduct at the hospital
  • Significantly
    contribute to the development and execution of the surgical services work
    plan for MUg
  • Working
    closely with the surgical team in complying with accredited standards for
    surgical practice in Uganda; ensuring MUg maintains this standard for
    continuity of operations in line with the national guidelines
  • Ensure
    compliance with quality assurance guidelines, that require; Attendance of
    monthly Quality Assurance activities related to surgical practice and attendance
    of weekly Quality Control activities
  • The
    incumbent will participate in team activities including Inter Disciplinary
    Team (IDT), CME mortality audits, Quality Improvement, Clinical
    directorate and staff meetings
  • Actively
    promote cohesive team working , ensuring that all Mug staff are treated
    with respect and high standards of professionalism
  • Undertake
    personal and engage in organizational skills development activities so as
    to enhance own skills as a contribution to the surgical teams proficiency
  • Keep
    up to date with emerging issues in the field of anaesthesia to maintain a
    highly skilled practice
  • Provide
    and communicate regularly to the surgeon personal plans for work
3. Research, Documentation
& Dissemination:
Carry out and
publish research in reputable peer review journals and contribute to the body
of medical evidence, thereby promoting best clinical practices, informing and
influencing national and international policy.
  • Actively
    contribute towards the generation of research ideas and hypotheses.
  • In
    charge of the documentation of operational case studies, success stories,
    best practices
  • Develop
    viable scientific research proposals that attract funding
  • Conduct/participate
    in ethical clinical and operational research.
  • In
    charge of documenting and disseminating  research findings to HCWs, communities,
    policy makers and institutions through conferences, workshops and
    publications.
  • Actively
    participate in report writing (M&E reports, progress reports)and support
    data collection in research or documentation activities as assigned by the
    surgeon
4. Financial Management: To appropriately manage and account for
assigned organizational funds and assets so as to enable achievement of the planned activities
  • Actively
    participate in the departmental budgeting process so as to ensure
    allocation of funds for departmental activities
  • Keep
    up to date and follow Mug financial systems and procedures for obtaining
    funds from the finance department.
  • Appropriately
    utilize the assigned funds for the specified activities to promote good stewardship
    of resources
  • Accurately
    and in a timely manner account for the allocated funds at the end of the activity
  • Participate
    in departmental/team work plan development and implementation within the
    assigned budgetary allocation
  • Ensure
    good stewardship of Mug resources and implementation of activities in efficient
    manner to promote organizational cost savings
  • Provide
    clinical expertise as required within income generation activities within
    the department as a contribution to the directorate’s income generation
    activities
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The
    applicant should preferably hold a Diploma in Clinical Medicine and
    Community Health or double trained or registered nurse/midwife with a
    higher diploma in anaesthesia
  • The
    applicant must possess valid Registration with the Allied Health
    Professionals’ Council
  • Three
    years’ experience in a hospital setting
  • Working
    knowledge on post exposure prophylaxis for HIV
  • Excellent
    interpersonal and communication skills
  • Teaching
    & mentorship skills
  • Ability
    to make decisions
  • Good
    analytical and critical thinking
  • Innovative
    and creative
  • Ability
    to work under pressure; and in sympathy with the Christian values of
    Mildmay Uganda.
  • Computer
    literacy i.e. Proficiency in various Microsoft office packages and working
    knowledge of English and local language(s) are crucial.
  • Evidence
    of a non-judgemental approach regarding race, religion, culture, sexuality
    and lifestyle is critical.
