Organisation (NGO) offering Comprehensive HIV Care & treatment, Training,
Research & General Medical Services; also providing Health Systems
Strengthening to scale up comprehensive HIV/AIDS Services in 16 districts of
Central Uganda.
Job Summary: The Trainer/Lecturer
will be responsible for the design and delivery of short training programmes, clinical
mentorships and consultancies, aiming to ensure that they are responsive;
attractive to clients and in line with MOH policies and guidelines.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
1. Participate in writing
proposals and delivering consultancy projects to contribute to MUg income base:
  • Work
    closely with the consultancy manager to maintain partnerships with
    relevant external training partners – MOH and other relevant ministries,
    non-governmental organisations, companies and universities and other institutions
    of higher learning
  • Market
    MUg training programmes to enlarge its customer base and market segment.
  • Significantly
    contribute towards expanding MUg’s income base through the delivery of
    high quality evidence-based short courses.
  • Deliver
    consultancy projects ensuring that clients’ needs are fully understood and
    any reporting requirements are met
  • Take
    part in training product development and updates.
  • Actively
    participate in the evaluation of projects and work with consultancy
    manager to utilize data to suggest follow-on projects to clients and to
    improve on quality of training
  • Work
    in liaison with the consultancy manager to establish effective working
    relationships with the various clients, communicating with them on a
    regular basis, anticipating challenges and handling any issues that may
    arise during and after the project
2. Participate in the
development of relevant and evidence-based curricula aimed at meeting the
training needs of in-service and pre-service health and social care workers and
to guarantee accreditation by national standard regulating bodies:
  • Carry
    out training needs identification, assessment and prioritization to ensure
    development of relevant and applicable programmes for improved service
    delivery
  • Actively
    participate in stakeholders meeting to disseminate findings from the
    various analyses and creating buy-in for the programmes
  • Work
    closely with identified technical working groups to develop curricula
    ensuring that the cognitive, psychomotor and emotive dimensions of
    learning are captured and that identified learning needs are
    well-addressed
  • Regularly
    review developed curricula to ensure that they meet the required standards
    for the different levels and seek consensus on curriculum documentation
    and submission to recognized standards regulatory body for accreditation.
  • Pilot
    curricula and make the necessary adaptations.
  • Regularly
    monitor curricula and document any areas that may need review
  • Work
    closely with teams to update curricula as required by the various
    accrediting bodies.
3. Co-ordinate short courses
and some course units on the long courses aiming to ensure that they are
delivered to the highest standards possible, participants achieve the intended
learning out-comes, and that they enjoy their stay at Mildmay Uganda or any
other venue used:
  • In
    charge of preparing, planning and designing relevant training sessions,
    appropriate to a set group of participants and intended learning outcomes
  • Work
    closely with the Registrar and Administrative office to identify and
    invite appropriate participants ensuring that the right people are
    admitted for the training.
  • Identify
    and notify facilitators for timely submission of relevant and updated
    visual and audio learning materials required for compiling the
    participants’ reference base
  • Proof
    read materials submitted ensuring that they are up-to-date and in line
    with current evidence and ministry of health policies
  • Communicate
    to all the stakeholders involved in the training for participation and
    buy-in
  • Actively
    monitor the smooth running of the training ensuring that participants’
    achieve the intended learning outcomes and that any issues are addressed
    in time to minimise impact on training
  • Conduct
    both participants’ and trainers’ evaluations of the training and write a comprehensive
    report highlighting the relevant learning points, challenges and recommendations
    for future improvements.
  • Work
    closely with partners to plan for follow up of the trainees to support
    application of theory to practice and to identify any gaps that may need further
    training and mentorship
  • Manage
    resources allocated to him/her to conduct training and mentorship ensuring
    efficient usage and high standards of accountability
4. Equip participants with
targeted competencies (Knowledge, Attitudes and Skills) needed to provide
quality health and social care services in line with developed and approved
curricula
  • Appraisal
    of various sections of curricula and develop appropriate time-tables
    ensuring that all learning outcomes for the particular course or unit are
    captured
  • In
    charge of preparing lesson plans for the various sessions ensuring that key
    content areas for achieving the intended learning outcomes are captured
    and that appropriate learning methodology is used
  • Develop
    and update learning content ensuring it is in line with current evidence
    and ministry of health guidelines and work with administrative officer to
    prepare course handbooks
  • Responsible
    for preparing necessary teaching aids (both visual and audio) including
    training equipment to enhance participants’ acquisition of the desired
    knowledge, skills and attitude and for improved application of theory to
    practice.
  • Basing
    on the lesson plan, utilise appropriate adult learning methodology to
    deliver sessions
  • Receive
    timely feed-back from participants and course coordinators and support
    lecturers to address identified areas of weakness growth and enhanced facilitation
    skills relevant to adult learners
  • Stay
    up to date in clinical practice by working for an agreed number of days in
    the Mildmay Uganda clinic
  • Stay
    up to date in teaching and learning by undertaking personal reading,
    participating in peer reviews and staff development workshops organised in
    the directorate.
  • Work
    in liaison with the research department to undertake research on identified
    areas within training and education
5. Co-ordinate placement
activities for pre-service and in-service health and social care providers
aiming to ensure that placementees achieve their learning outcomes and that
feedback is provided to the various stakeholders:
  • Take
    part in marketing the placement programme to individuals and organisations
    to ensure that adequate numbers of placementees are attracted to sustain
    the programme
  • Participate
    in the identification and engagement of universities and organisations,
    building strong relationships that will result in long term partnerships
    for the placement programme
  • In
    charge of developing placement programmes ensuring that key stakeholders
    are involved and that packages are aligned to the placementees’ needs.
  • Orient
    placementees on the work of MUg; sharing all models and best practices to encourage
    them to identify areas where they may choose to focus
  • Co-ordinate
    the activities of placement for the different placementees, ensuring that
    they are reasonably occupied and that the different MUg staff know when to
    expect them and what their expectations are
  • Offer
    timely technical support to placementees during their stay at MUg aiming
    to ensure that they maximise their time and that they achieve their
    intended learning outcomes
  • In
    charge of collecting relevant data and compile reports for dissemination
    among key stakeholders and for use in programme improvement
  • Ensure
    that all evaluation and reporting requirements for the placement programme
    are fulfilled on time and to good standard; ensuring that all stakeholder
    requirements are being met
6. Participate in marking of
students’ assignments ensuring that set guidelines and time-lines are adhered
to:
  • Regularly
    review/familiarize self with the assignment guidelines to ensure critical
    understanding of the assignment for an objective view point.
  • Conduct
    timely first marking, second marking and/or moderation of the given
    assignment as per the set guidelines to ensure consistency and
    comprehensiveness.
  • Send
    scripts and feedback sheets to the examinations officer for scrutiny and
    preparation of external examiner’s report
7. Contribute to marketing of
MUg training programmes in order to improve on MUg visibility (positioning,
branding) and income generation:
  • Ensure
    client satisfaction through delivery of high quality programmes and
    demonstrating a high level of professionalism in dealing with students and
    partners.
  • Significantly
    contribute to designing and circulation of brochures by providing
    information on the courses and reviewing the drafts developed by the
    librarian/registrar
  • Actively
    participate in writing training and funding proposals in order to increase
    on income generation
  • Participate
    in consultancy activities ensuring that they are completed in time and
    delivered to the highest standard possible for customer satisfaction
  • Work
    closely with consultancy manager to identify opportunities for marketing
    MUg courses and attend partner meetings/conferences to make presentations,
    and circulate brochures to improve on MUg’s visibility.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The
    applicant should preferably hold a Bachelor’s degree in a health or social
    care
  • Current
    registration with a relevant professional body
  • Additional
    training in palliative care is an added advantage
  • A
    minimum of three years’ experience in adult teaching experience
  • Prior
    exposure and experience/knowledge of HIV and/or other chronic illnesses
  • Working
    knowledge of current WHO and MOH guidelines
  • Ability
    to network and liaise with various partners

    and lifestyle is critical.
