CT, with offices in Washington, D.C. and worldwide. IPA discovers and promotes
effective solutions to global poverty problems. IPA designs, rigorously
evaluates, and refines these solutions and their applications together with
decision-makers to ensure that the evidence created is used to improve
opportunities for the world’s poor. Since our founding in 2002, IPA has worked
with over 350 leading academics to conduct over 450 evaluations in 51
countries. This research has informed hundreds of successful programs that now
impact millions of individuals worldwide.
Job Summary: The
Research Associate will work closely with academic researchers and other field
staff to perform a variety of tasks including, but not limited to: designing
survey questionnaires, conducting qualitative research, running pilot exercise,
refining study design and surveying instruments, managing survey teams,
negotiating contracts with survey firms, checking and analyzing data, cleaning
data and assisting in preliminary analysis, assisting in the writing of project
reports and policy memos, and coordinating with local partners running the
programs being evaluated. The project involves close partnership with
high-level government officials and depends on a high capacity for negotiation
and diplomacy. It will take place across 33 districts in Uganda and will
require the Research Associate to travel for longer periods.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • The
    Research Assistant will pretest an audit tool and conduct an audit on
    government-provided household goods and housing;
  • Oversee
    a team of local engineers and veterinarians and trouble-shoot logistical
    problems in the field;
  • In
    charge of training and mentoring a team in community relations and execute
    a time-sensitive scorecard delivery to communities in the sample
  • Responsible
    for developing and piloting baseline survey instruments; manage
    translation into local languages
  • Implement
    Computer Assisted Interviewing (CAI) for surveys
  • Manage
    data entry and assist in data cleaning and analysis
  • Ensure
    adherence to data quality protocols, including auditing enumerators,
    monitoring data collection, and conducting data quality audits
  • Manage
    critical high-level relationships with partner organizations
  • Actively
    participate in meetings with key stakeholders and present research
    findings
  • Write
    reports detailing research findings and proposed interventions
  • Manage
    funding and human subjects approval applications, and ensure that all
    necessary approvals are in place
  • Maintain
    compliance with all company policies and procedures
  • Perform
    related duties as assigned by supervisor
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The
    ideal candidate for the Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) Research
    Associate vacancy should hold a bachelor’s degree in economics, social
    sciences, public policy, or related fields
  • Excellent
    management and organizational skills along with strong quantitative skills
  • Keen
    attention to detail and ability to meet time-sensitive deadlines
  • Fluency
    in English with strong communication skills
  • Working
    knowledge of Stata (strongly preferred) or other data analysis software is
    preferred
  • Detailed
    knowledge and understanding of randomized controlled trials preferred
  • Flexible,
    self-motivating, able to manage multiple tasks efficiently, and team
    player
  • Demonstrated
    ability to manage high-level relationships with partner organizations
  • Prior
    exposure and experience living in a Uganda is strongly preferred.
