Job Summary: The Agribusiness Specialist will be
responsible for technical leadership and oversight for program activities
related to improving producer organizations’ ability to manage
business-oriented activities along value chains and improve producer
organizations’ governance and management structures that enable efficient and
effective delivery of services responsive to the needs of their members.
Key Duties and
Responsibilities: 
  • Guide
    producer organizations and/or link them to business development services
    to establish effective business processes and procedures related to
    entrepreneurial skills, financial management, bulk purchasing and selling,
    marketing and market development, agreement management, and negotiation.
  • Mentor
    producer organizations in the development and implementation of strategic
    documents (strategic plans, business plans, etc.).
  • Develop
    and implement strategies to strengthening organizational governance and
    ability to monitor activities for greater accountability and transparency.
  • Develop
    and implement strategies to increase POs’ production and marketing
    efficiencies and enhance competitiveness.
  • Strengthening
    the capacity of POs to mobilize resources for sustainable operations.
  • Actively
    facilitate producer organization management at the primary and apex levels
    to strengthen linkages, relationships, roles, responsibilities and
    information flow.
  • Support
    POs to access agricultural inputs, advisory and business development
    services, and output markets
  • Link
    producer organizations to proven service providers of Information and
    Communications Technology (ICT) applications that enhance core business
    activities and member services.
  • Establish
    strategies to mentor and coach producer organization management to ensure
    services are adapted to needs of all members, including men, women, and
    youth.
  • Perform
    other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience: 
  • The
    applicant should preferably hold a Bachelor’s degree in agribusiness
    management, agricultural economics, or other relevant field (a diploma in
    a relevant field and an additional five years of experience could be
    substituted for a degree).
  • At
    least five years’ experience in program management, agribusiness or
    agricultural development activities.
  • Familiarity
    with the maize, bean, and/or coffee value chain.
  • Detailed
    experience supporting producer organizations to access agricultural
    inputs, advisory and business development services, and output markets;
    increase their production and marketing efficiencies; and enhance product
    competitiveness.
  • Excellent
    track record of achieving results in private sector-led development
    activities, preferably in agriculture.
  • Detailed
    working knowledge of gender and youth integration approaches relevant to
    producer organizations and cash crop farmers.
  • Experience
    using information and communication technology to facilitate business
    transactions and service delivery.
  • Demonstrated
    high-level technical, analytical, interpersonal skills and ability to meet
    tight deadlines with logical analyses and clear presentation.
  • Proficiency
    in MS Outlook, MS Word and other Microsoft Office programs as well as
    common internet applications.
  • Fluency
    in English, with excellent written communication skills. Ability to speak
    at least one Ugandan language.
  • Ability
    to travel up to 50% of his/her time. Ability to travel occasionally within
    the region and to the US.
  • Evidence
    of status to work legally in Uganda. Uganda national preferred.
