recruiting a high calibre individual to support the development of a new East
African sector development and investment institution. They are independent
private foundation, there are focused on catalysing the growth and
competitiveness of key sectors in East Africa that impact large numbers of
people.
Job
Summary:
The Industry Strategy Developer will provide critical support in
setting up this significant and highly innovative new institution for East
Africa. He / she will have the opportunity to participate in the implementation
of a range of complex, challenging areas fundamental to the work of the
institution. The industry strategy team shall be tasked with appraising
high-potential industries in the East African region from a commercial stand
point with a view to developing a deep understanding of the industry and
formulating strategic options for organization to significantly expand the
industry. Support will be provided to catalytic businesses in areas such as
technology transfer, capacity building and access to finance (including
organization making direct investment into companies crowding in investment
from others). Broader industry-wide engagement on industry policies/
regulations, industry association capacity building, the R&D landscape and
beyond will complement this support to lead businesses.
Key
Duties and Responsibilities:  
1. Overall Project Management:
·        
In charge of developing and documenting in detail
a draft approach for Organization’s industry appraisals and the development of
industry strategies (including resourcing plan and decision gate-way points);
·        
Delivering industry strategies for prioritized
industries as required; and
·        
Directly managing internal staff and external
senior consultants. There are likely to be between 5-10 people reporting
(directly and indirectly) to the role holder at any time.
2. Resourcing and Development:  Building industry strategy teams, including
identifying/ recruiting industry experts and East Africa senior advisors;
3. Stakeholder engagement and management:
Working closely with organization team members/ advisors to gain input
into the industry appraisal process and seeking approval for recommended
industries to move forward to later stages of the strategy development process
and implementation.
4. Engagement with industry specialists:  Building and developing networks within East
Africa of specialists in various interest economic sectors who would be
instrumental in gathering and analyzing data on these sectors, in addition to
assisting and advising on strategy development.
5. Outputs:  Writing papers and delivering presentations on the
strategic industries selected with clear analysis and recommendations.
Qualifications,
Skills and Experience:  
·        
The applicant should preferably hold a Master’s
degree or equivalent level professional qualifications;
·        
A minimum of ten years of relevant work
experience.
·        
This role will require a high calibre and
experienced individual with the highest levels of ambition and commitment to
quality in order to drive this innovative new initiative forward.
·        
Exceptional skills in some of the following
disciplines: project management, financial analysis, economic analysis, market
studies and market modelling, corporate/industry strategy and business
planning, international development (private sector focus), change management,
complex problem solving;
·        
Proven ability to work cooperatively with other
team members, consultants, senior advisors, and provide assistance and support
to wider team members;
·        
Ability and willingness to travel in East Africa,
up to approximately 25% of the time;
·        
Ability to build collaborative relationships with
others inside and outside of the organization;
·        
Takes action to develop skills and knowledge
required for effectiveness in the role (continuous learning);
·        
Ability to express oneself clearly in
conversations, and interactions and in writing.
·        
Past experience in undertaking industry level
analysis and due diligence;
·        
Good experience working in East African markets,
with a well-developed network in the region;
·        
Significant experience identifying, managing and
working with a diverse range of team members and consultants;
·        
Prior experience coping in a complex, fast moving
environment and dealing p Experience understanding the interaction of
governments and the private sector in East Africa; and
