About MRC/UVRI:
The Medical Research Council/ Uganda Virus Research Institute
(MRC/UVRI) Uganda Virus Research Unit on AIDS was established following a
request in 1988 from the Uganda Government to the British Government for
collaboration on the research of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection
and AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency). The Unit is a center of excellence in
HIV/AIDS related research. It conducts large-scale epidemiological and
intervention studies, clinical trials, virological and immunological research
and behavioural studies, and has generated a wealth of research results that
have been used to inform policy and practice, and that have led to a large
number of scientific publications in peer reviewed journals over time.
Job Summary: The Laboratory Technologist will carry out analyses
and report results of the laboratory procedures performed in the laboratory,
according to GCLP standards.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Receive blood samples, process and store
    PBMC, plasma, serum and other biological
  • Samples according to SOPs and GCLP
  • Produce reliable and precise data by
    performing SOP-guided laboratory experiments assigned by scientists or
    supervisors. This may include whole blood assays for subsequent cytokine
    analysis
  • Implement the LIMS and freezer works
    specimen storage system to achieve good sample archiving and tracking
    practices in charge of implementing GCLP practices
  • Implement health and safety requirements
    per SOPs by conducting safety induction of new staff/students,
  • Refilling first Aid boxes, administering
    first aid, updating materials data safety sheets
  • Actively participate in performing IATA
    compliant shipment of samples to and from partner laboratories
  • Render support in writing and reviewing of
    operational and study specific SOPs
  • Prepare for audits, work and support other
    collaborative activities within the laboratory
  • Keenly track equipment servicing
    requirements
  • Ensure that required reagents and supplies
    are in sufficient stocks and are kept securely in recommended conditions
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The ideal candidates for the Laboratory
    Technologist  should possess
    relevant bachelor’s degrees in biological sciences or a BSc in a lab
    related subject
  • Must have attained at least a credit in
    Math, Physics, Chemistry and Biology
  • Past experience/knowledge of GCLP and lab
    safety requirements
  • Ability to perform IATA compliant shipment
    of samples to and from partner laboratories
  • Specialist diploma in Chemistry; for the
    clinical lab.
  • Excellent technical skills in PBMC
    processing, implementation of GCLP and lab safety practices.
  • Past experience working within a clinical
    trials laboratory
  • Working knowledge of LIMS and freezer
    works specimen storage system
  • Computer literacy skills i.e. Use of
    Microsoft Office packages; Excel and Word desired
  • Be a team player and results oriented,
    disciplined and high regard for confidentiality at all times
  • Possess the ability to deliver on plans in
    a timely manner and willingness to work outside working hours whenever
    need arises
