Hopkins University Research Collaboration is implementing a US Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funded project to establish a birth
defects surveillance system in four major hospitals in Kampala, Uganda. The
project’s aim is to determine the baseline prevalence of selected major
external BD. This project will also include a nested case-control study to
examine the association of maternal exposures to birth defects.

Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funded project to establish a birth

project’s aim is to determine the baseline prevalence of selected major
external BD. This project will also include a nested case-control study to
examine the association of maternal exposures to birth defects.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible
for the examination of all births in the hospital to ascertain the presence
or absence of major external birth defects. - In
charge of counselling mothers of newborns with birth defects and linking
them to special care. - Consent
and enrol participants in the case control study. - Responsible
for interviewing mothers and reviewing their medical records to collect
surveillance and study related data. - Ensuring
participants’ confidentiality and privacy including safety of data
collection equipment like tablets and laptops. - Actively
participating in study data quality assurance and control. - Working
closely with the hospital staff midwives to prepare expectant mothers for
delivery, and conducting of deliveries.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The
applicant should be a Registered midwife or Nurse with a valid licence to
practice in Uganda (UNMC licence). - At
least three years’ Midwifery practice in a busy institution. - Past
experience in provision of HCT/ART/ PMTCT services and experience in
counselling are desired. - Previous
experience in Research with human participants will be an added advantage. - Detailed
working knowledge of PMTCT, ART - Working
knowledge and skills in Newborn assessment and care. - Be
able to accomplish assigned tasks accurately with detailed completeness. - Possess
excellent oral communication skills - Be
a good team player - Highly
flexible to adjustment in work schedule - Highly
computer literate and able to use a computer I tablet to collect data. - Ability
to speak and read Luganda - Willing
and able to work extended duty shifts which may include 12 hour shifts,
Including Public holidays and weekends - Be
willing to work in a busy maternity setting.
